Kitchen barn door

Donna
by Donna
I'm expanding pantry to 6ft wide & like to put up sliding barn door, to slide open to the right. but the wall isnt long enough to allow the door to be supported. And fridge is on left. Anyone know how I can fix this??
The new pantry will start by the fridge and will stick out just like the wall on right. But need to know how to hang slider without enough wall.

Your best bet would be to hang two doors similar to old time closet doors where one is in front of the other.

I found a picture of what I was thinking so there's the hardware out there to do it. It'll probably cost an arm and a leg though so you might want to figure out a way to DIY it. Here's a picture of it. I tried to go to the site, but my firewall wouldn't let me. https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/e7/dc/51/e7dc514776d6e24738477a6cbccdc4db.jpg

You can possibly use @Kristi @ Addicted 2 Decorating system by adding an additional pipe track, one extended in front of the other. Maybe she'll pop in and be able to answer any questions. http://www.hometalk.com/diy/build/doors-windows/diy-barn-door-style-doors-with-a-twist-6431596

You can possibly redesign the shelving with a closet maid organizer and then get one folding door going accross.

You can pull the pantry out a few inches so the door can swing in front of the fridge and if it doesn't have to be 'barn door' look, you can use a smaller track, sold at HD and Lowes for pocket doors that you can roll a door on that are much cheaper. good luck:-)

Could it slide behind the refrigerator? Assume you are removing cabinets, I guess some of that area might be blocked.

Barn door installation is based on having enough wall space for them to slide. You could extend the depth of the pantry whereby giving you the space for the door to slide in front of the refrigerator, but this means losing additional floor space. Now another option would be to put in French style door, which you design to give the look of barn doors. As far as creating the interior storage space I would highly recommend using the Elfa storage systems sold by "The Container Store". You can either go on-line or visit a store with your dimensions and they will design the best solution for the space, and they also do installation. I have used this storage systems in my closets and they are much easier to install and are sturdier the Closet Maid. http://www.containerstore.com/welcome.htm?utm_source=Google&utm_medium=Search&utm_campaign=TM|Brand|Exact|Desktop&gclid=Cj0KEQjw4NmvBRCRp_yu2bzal4YBEiQAWfjpJtCymh6PdbjCetcBxCHyaUBBu5AloCow3Q--RlHQcVgaAqrJ8P8HAQ

I wonder if it could be done with bi-fold doors that would slide AROUND the corner?? More hardware? more money? I am sure with the right "stuff" it could be done!!! GOOD LUCK!!!!

I would re-think the barn door idea. This is hot right now which means in 10 years or fewer it will be dateable to now. Know what I mean? It is also a very heavy look which is fine in a loft space or a barn but IMHO looks out of place in a regular house.

I don't think you're going to be able to have a sliding barn door, given the lack of wall space for the hardware, however, if you want a barn door look, you could modify a slab door to look like a barn door, but still have it on hinges like the existing door. Alternatively, you could make a barn door from new - there are lots of examples online. Either would give you the look, but I really can't see a way you're going to get the sliding part in that space.

How about some distressed shutters instead?

Looks like you would have to build support beam stretching across the hallway for the hardware. No other way to do it.

How about the fake barn door/pocket door?
    • Susan G Susan G on Sep 14, 2015
@Kathy Meador Wells Where did you see the fake barn doors at? I would like a half-high one, can't remember what they are called, to keep the dogs in the kitchen when needed without blocking off the entire doorway. The doorway is wide though and no place to put the track since it is halfway up the opening! LOL

Thankyou all for your great ideas and help. I guess no Barn door for this pantry but perhaps a faux look of a barn door will do. Thankyou

@Donna I think you'll like it. I am pretty sure, if I'm thinking what you are thinking about extending your pantry, that it could work.

If you do decide on a double door put an extra hinge on them for added support. You could then add some narrow pocket shelves for smaller items so they don't get lost.

I think you are referring to a Dutch door. I have never seen a fake one. You would have to have one made and make sure they know it would be a pocket door for the pantry. Same for the half door.

The only way to do it is a double track slider 6 foot wide. Like sliding doors across a closet. But you could faux finish the doors to look like barn wood and use decorative hardware to look like the slats. I Faux finished my barn door see my post.

Hi kim, really like your idea. Can h post a picture. This look doesn't look tacky? So u think it will look good for this space, or should I do bifolds??
  • Jeanette S Jeanette S on Sep 15, 2015
I love bi-fold doors because you can fold them back to have room to get things in and out. Louver doors allow for ventilation! I use them on my closet doors because it keeps the musty smell away! And I love the "island" feeling they have!

You can install a pocket door instead. It won't require additional room to open and close. This post explains what you need to know: http://goo.gl/i8nJ6X
