I'd just give it a very light sand so that your 'base/undercoat' of paint adheres to the break/divider. After the completed drying period, apply your then chosen chalk paint - it should do the trick.

Ive used chalk paint on on just about every surface and there is no need to sand. All you have to do is make sure what you are painting is clean. After you paint, you will need to apply a couple of coats of wax to the piece. I use Minwax paste wax on furniture. Its just rub, buff and repeat. :)

If it's already painteded brown go for it. If it's stained brown perhaps restoring the finish and adding some new pulls might brighten it up enough for you.

I just looked up "breakfront" on google images and now I know what it is! I have one of those (I call it a hutch) that I was bored with and updated with wrapping paper and fairy lights. I bought a roll of wallpaper and put it on behind the doors with a mixture of white glue and water instead of Modpage. It's cheaper and if I really want it to come off later I can with just water. Then I added battery operated fairy lights to make it sparkle at night.

I love chalk painted furniture so I say go for it. There are LOTS of sites with chalk painted furniture to check out for ideas. I'm not sure if it's allowed to list specific sites like that here, but if you search you will find enough goodies to look at to keep you busy for hours!! I only wish I had more room in my house to put some of these beauties.
