When I started the update to my living room it was time to update the fireplace too. So to determine if I liked the pattern before I purchased tile I used the self stick tiles. It came out perfect! It's held up for almost 3 years.
Original tile fireplace
This is my fireplace with the original builder ceramic tile. I started in the far corner, working my way across. I laid the sheets over each other as I went so I could mark where I needed to cut the sheets.
Me laying out the tile
The first thing I did was thoroughly wash and dry the ceramic tiles. A degreaser, such as trisodium phosphate (TSP), is the best product for a thorough cleaning.

When it’s clean, you must wait until the tile is completely dry before installing your peel and stick Smart Tiles. The tiles won’t stick on a damp surface.
The finished product
There was nothing left to do at this point. I did run a shower squeegee over the completed project to ensure that there were no air bubbles and everything was flat.
My fireplace today
I decided to do a full living room face lift about 2 years ago. This is what it looks like today. I went with a gray palette from Sherwin Williams (Zircon for the walls and Gray Shingle for the ceiling). I love my living room now! I am only starting to see some of the tiles come up in the corners. I will redo those sheets with the leftovers I have from the original project.

Will this work with a gas fireplace, we use it often?

  • First thing my husband brought up was if the vinyl tile would bubble up or not from the heat. Do you use your fireplace? If so, how often? If you use it do you keep it on for a limited time to preserve the tiles?

I would love to get rid of this black tile! Please let us know :)
