  • Can you post a pic? Does it have a mantle? Sometimes just updating the mantle and the fireplace surround makes a huge impact. With a rock fireplace I would go with a chunkier barnboard /beam type mantle. If any brass, spray paint black (rated for heat). Hope this gets the ideas churning.

It does have a rustic barn board mantle with side supports, just want a new look. Thinking of painting it some off white or cream color. Thanks for your suggestion!
    • @Judy Link What color are stone? White or cream may not look quite right with the stone. I would maybe try to color match one of the colors in the stone you like ~greys, browns, reds? That would certainly update your look and give attention to the fireplace. Also changing out what you have on top and giving new life to the accessories (Add a pop of color here too by spray painting some chunky candle holders a vibrant color or even silver/metallic. A large mirror (so long as it reflects something nice which many people forget to check when hanging mirrors). Since it is stone, I would just have it sit on the mantle. Even if you have a picture you love, painting the frame will update its look as well. good luck!

You thinking about painting the stone. I have been thinking the same with mine. Have seen some pix online that look great. We have huge flat-layed (not stacked) river rock all the way to the ceiling, and it looks so 80's to me. Was gonna take down, sheet rock and put something else below mantel, but that's a lot of work, and I'm loving the painted FP rock I've seen. Good luck!
