Ficus have not done well and we need a hedge to conceal a chain link fence and to provide privacy behind our pool.

Living here in Southern Florida in North Fort Myers/ Fort Myers, Florida, I think we have the best of the Gardening world when it comes to trying to choose what to plant where. I don't know that I've seen many boxwood shrubs planted down here or should I say planted for privacy. What I have seen though are Beautiful Beaugainvillea Bushes and Trellises that can grow to towering heights if allowed too. But they are so beautiful no one ever seems to care. If you are looking for something with maybe not as many flowers, but still provides privacy; there's always the Hibiscus. Lastly my suggestion for a flowerless full coverage hedge is the Arborvite. It is a beautiful evergreen that's always held a soft spot in my heart. I'm including a couple pictures, but I will also include a Web address to a nursery where you can see for yourself what does and does not work in our climate. Good Luck! Since you have a fairly solid fence, I suggest vines.

Thank You Rebecca Beisenstein. We're going to add vines but the fence is only 4' and we need taller coverage.

Thank You Jan, I haven't heard of this but it is pet friendly and looks very much like it would suit our needs. We'll check further.

I have it along my chain link fence and it provides wonderful privacy. They are easily propagated, grow relatively quick, and can grow pretty tall. My only complaint with them is that they require regular trimming to prevent them from getting too tall. Good luck!

    Bougainvillea

I would not go for the FASTEST growing cover since it may be invasive, non-native and may require more care and trimming. Try the BEST solution for your area. You will be glad in the long run.
