How do I remove top layer of the upholstery off chairs?

Hi! I have two fabulously comfy arm chairs that are in great shape EXCEPT the thin fake "leather" coating of the upholstery is flaking off. I want to know how to clean all the fake "leather" coating off so that I can redo them. Any suggestions? Also suggestions for recovering? I was thinking chalk paint....Would really appreciate any advice you have. THANK YOU~

use an ice scraper, or some people heat material with a blow dryer,then use fabric paint to decorate

Funny I'm reupholstering a recliner with same proevrything works out.blem. What I'm going to do is take as much of the crap as possible then I'm laying. Pleather material on top. Once it's on I could care less if it peels off. Good luck to us both hope
I would brush it with a stiff brush and just upholster right over the old peeling stuff, once you get the loose pieces off.
