any ideas on covering up paneling?

clean it well with soap and water, sand lightly with a scotch pad, spray with drywall texture then primer and paint.

Depending upon what type of paneling- I would consider painting it an antique white and paint the trim a bright white and some detail in crown molding if there isn't any. I would first carefully try to loosen one of the boards to see if it is glued or look for nail holes. If it is glued, then your best bed would be to paint it but if it comes off and there is drywall or plaster beneath it I would attempt to remove it. If it does come off and it re-usable I would see about donating it or selling it for a few bucks to someone who could use it instead of taking to landfill. You can use drywall mud to skim coat the paneling and sand and paint but this is a lot of work and it is messy. Paneling that has been painted can look very good. good luck!

First you will need to paint it with a good primer. Then paint it with a coat of flat paint, your choice of color. Now for the creative part. You can stencil every section or every other section, using glossy paint, but use the same color! Also paint the grooves of the paneling with the glossy paint for added interest. If you don't want to stencil, just paint every other section of the paneling with the glossy paint. I added a photo with the flat & glossy paint. It really adds interest to the wall. It actually gives the illusion that the paint is 2 different colors but it is the same color! I actually did this in my bathroom but used a gloss pearl paint with a rag roller. Anyone can do this on furniture too!!Good luck & post your pictures when you are finished! :)

Hi to cover paneling you can purchase a thin paper like fabric at Lowes. It covers the lines in the panels and allows you to paper or paint over it. An economical way to cover it is with cotton sheeting twin size is most affordable. you dip the fabric in fabric softener and place on paneling. when you are bored take it down wash it , and change it. you also can use glue fill in and sand the grooves in the panels , prime with Kilz and paint

I agree with Shelley. Simply painting paneling makes for a gorgeous country cottage look. I remodeled a living room that had very dark paneling with a light yellow paint with white trim and it looks awesome!

I covered my paneling with wallpaper. I first filled all the grooves with drywall mud, sanded lightly, then primed it so the wallpaper would have a chance of being removed. It was laborious but it really paid off in the end. I love my wallpaper. In another house I just cleaned it really well with TSP and painted it with a semi-gloss finish. I didn't mind the look of painted paneling then.

Don't like panelling. Even painted, it looks like painted panelling. I would see if it is just nailed, and not glued on. If nailed, I'd remove it and drywall. If glued, then one of the suggestions for filling/avoiding the lines would work.

I have painted over the paneling in our family room, and it looks just like bead board, a look that I really like.

There are some awesome ideas here on the paneling subject!! @ @Connie-Jo Nellis I couldn't resist enlarging the picture of your furry friend! I had to look twice because she/he is a spitting image of my furry friend. I'm going to post her pic so you can see how close their appearance is!! I showed my honey your picture and he thought it was ours.This is Precious, she is 16 years old now. Your baby looks a lot younger than mine? Isn't it amazing how close their looks are? I can't tell if your's has blue eyes but sure does look like my girl. Is yours a Rag-Doll?

Since most paneling is installed on top of drywall. Why not just take it down? Check to see that it is first!

I simply primed the paneling and then painted it with a roller. Simple and I loved going from dark brown to sea foam green. I didn't bother cleaning or sanding in between either. But I'm definitely no professional. (from Jim's wife - Mary)

There is a product called paintable wallpaper that I used to cover my paneling it works terrific, can not see the paneling lines. Then paint the color u want. Got it at Home Depot

My sister painter her and it came out very nice . You can lay dry wall over the top and mud it works good
