Replacing pantry with more cupboards

Our kitchen in this new-to-us home is SO small and lacks storage. There is a double door pantry and I was wondering if anyone has ever removed such a pantry and replaced it by installing more cabinets in its place. Also, the existing cupboards do not go all the way up to the ceiling as the ones in our previous home did. I'd like to find out if we could add some small cupboards up there so that we could reach a maximum of storage.

Great questions. I have cabinets that have fur downs too and always wondered if we could tear them out. But afraid of what those furdowns are hiding

All the houses in our neighborhood have empty space above the cabinets. Our neighbor cut openings in the drywall and then installed hinged doors he made with thin plywood so they could have extra storage space. Need a step stool or ladder to access, but that would be needed for cabinets that go to the ceiling, too.

We don't have soffits above our cabinets. The builder just put short cabinets in with a space above between them and the ceiling. I guess some people would like a ledge for display, but I just think it's a waste of space and a dust catcher! We will probably install some small cabinets up there; we saw some at Costco and are going back to look at them. I still don't know about converting the pantry to cupboards. Haven't heard anyone doing that, which I think would work well for us.

@LouAnne S So when hometalkers give you advice its best to research all options and reply to those that tried to help.

Hi there, I saw this post a while back and thought the idea of raising the cabinets up to the ceiling and adding an open shelf beneath them was genius: http://www.domesticimperfection.com/2013/08/how-to-raise-your-cabinets-add-a-shelf/ Question, when you say a double door pantry do you mean its like a separate closet which has a double door or do you mean it is a full height cabinet with double doors?

@GrandmasHouseDIY Yes, that's what we have with wire shelving inside. Spacious, but I'm having trouble organizing it. This kitchen is so UNLIKE anything we have had in our 48+ years of home ownership......

Thanks for informing me. It's sort of a strange word if you haven't heard it before. We just call them bulkheads or boxed in soffits.

You could use the pantry room as broom, mop and vacumn area or take the door off and make a coffee bar, the area over the cabinets I hate dust collecting areas so I would put doors up there or raise them up.

I would put basket or metal buckets and place things that you use once in a while. I use my pantry so I wouldn't get rid of it.

@Teresa C What I have in the pantry would do just as well in cupboards. The extra canned or boxed goods and paper items, etc. we've always kept in a closed cupboard in our garage.

When I originally asked my question someone here sent me a link to a posting showing how someone had put a coffee "station" and cupboards in their double pantry, but now I can't find that link. Does this sound familiar to anyone?
