Miniature and Fairy Garden Design Ideas by Shirley Bovshow

I put together an extensive blog post showing before and after photos of miniature and fairy gardens that I presented on the Home and Family Show (Hallmark) recently. ...»

It was necessary in order to get a good look at the gardens since TV segments are short.

Most of my mini gardens are made from recycled materials that are used as planters and landscape accessories.

Take a look at what I make from a broken garden finial, a broken hanging lantern, a rustic wood shipping crate and a ceramic cookie jar!

I like to save money whenever possible.

  • Create a topiary using coat hangers and ivy. It is such a fun easy project that takes under 30 minutes!
  • Here's the topiary with my milk glass collection! The green really looks pretty against all the white.
  • Step 1: Create round circles from coat hangers. Unbend the end of the coat hanger to put it into the dirt.
  • Step 2: Combine the two circles together to make a sphere form for the topiary.
  • Step 3: Wind the ivy around the coat hanger to train the ivy to create your topiary!

Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival: Ideas!

I presented at the "Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival" this year and brought back many beautiful garden design ideas to share with you! ...»

The gardens that caught my eye were not the "over the top" ones, rather gardens that can be duplicated in most any yard.

A hallmark of "Disney" design that extends to their gardens are the use of characters made famous in their movies and parks. These characters appear in topiary form. Though I'm more of a "natural-style" garden designer, I couldn't resist the appeal of some of these clever creations.

"Outdoor BONUS Room" ~ Take full advantage of all the space in your yard and incorporate the space under the deck!

"Outdoor Bonus Room" ~ An often over looked space in the landscape that can provide a great return on design value is the space under the deck! If you are building a new deck or have an ...»
existing deck the area under it will need to be considered. Most of the time it is covered with rock or mulch and left alone. If you plan to complete yourself or hire a design professional make sure you consider a couple of factors: Head room - 7' is a good minimum height for useable space; Drainage - always make sure you create a positive flow away from the house; Planting Soil - if you plan on gardening you will need to amend the soil and work to negate the compaction due to deck construction. When working on your landscape master plan make sure to create an "Outdoor Bonus Room" under the deck. Cheers!

  • I recently completed a deck garden makeover for the Home & Family Show on Hallmark Channel. Although, a TV project, this is a landscape design anyone can implement at home. 2
  • This is the "before" photo of the deck I was assigned to beautify.
  • I had two narrow planting strips like this to create a dynamic garden. I was able to do it by planting in containers, recessed into these areas.
  • After photo: Shutters were painted, window box added along with planting towers and drop-in containers full of plants. See my blog post at Garden Center TV for more photos and details!

Deck Garden Makeover With Drought Tolerant Plants!

I was assigned a deck garden makeover recently for the Hallmark daytime show, "Home & Family" with Cristina Ferrare and Mark Steines. ...»

If you like home and garden shows, you'll love this unique daytime show where all the guests are experts from this genre!

When I design a garden makeover for television, one of the first things I do is secure the very best looking plants available.

This is TV after all!

The Planting Conditions

The deck is open and sunny and has a southern orientation, meaning it receives generous sunshine most of the day.

Read the rest and see tons of photos on my Garden Center TV blog where I name plant varieties, garden accessories and prices!:

Front Porch Privacy

I took lattice panels that had been in my back yard and put them around my front porch to create a little sense of privacy from my very close neighbors. I plant mandevilla vines growing up them in the summer which creates a nice touch of red in spots on the lattice.
