April Blooms

More spring bulbs are up and now the flowering cherry trees are in full swing too. A few of their branches dress the birdbaths and grace our table. "Gudoshnik" tulips in our front yard ...»
will be popping this week and the single and double-flowering Kerria shrubs provide a bright splash of yellow amid all the new green spring growth. A whole day ahead of me to spend in the garden, my idea of nirvana.

  • A bulletin board with two ways to hang...
  • A frame was cut down to the desired size, then used as a template to trace out the bulletin board section from a piece of leftover fibre board sitting around.
  • A $2 sandbag from the hardware store was hot glued onto the board from behind.
  • Twine was cut to size, then knotted at the ends, attached with screws.
  • A small shelf was added for writing notes.
  • Both clothespins and pushpins can be used for this board. Tip: weather your clothespins by leaving them outside for a while.
  • Need an even easier idea? Use a mattress spring... I love cheating. :)

A cool cheater bulletin board build for non builders

When I desired to whip up a new burlap bulletin board, I snooped no further than my own home for a bunch of found objects. (it pays to hoard!) This build consists of simply screwing the ...»
components right onto the wall. Miter joins need not apply... this one's for cheaters. :)

Hydrogen Peroxide - How to Use it as a Bleach Alternative

  • Apply coconut oil with dry rag.
  • Finished wood. NO stain was applied that is just from the coconut oil!

  • I left the original paint finish. But applied a coat of the coconut oil over top of the paint (since the wood shows through).

Refinishing Old Wood with Coconut Oil

To refinish old dry wood simply sand and wash with warm soapy water. Let the wood dry out (after washing it). Now using a clean dry rag apply a thin coat of coconut oil. Let it sit for 5 ...»
minutes or so, and then buff (wipe in a circular motion). Repeat if the wood is really dry.

For this piece I also applied a coat of Miss Mustard Seed Furniture Wax as added protection.

The coconut oil brought out the natural color of the wood, re-hydrated the wood, and took away that old musty barn smell. Oh yeah and it's also a great hand moisturizer. It's a win-win!

I am so happy with the results and the best part is it totally non-toxic (people eat coconut oil) so the kids helped me with this project.

Inexpensive options for beautiful Countertops!

It doesn't always need to be expensive!

I wanted to give a few examples of inexpensive options for beautiful countertops. ...»

Here are three that we have done recently.

The first is a reclaimed top that was on its way to the dump. We refinished it and added it to an antique dresser base to make an island in our kitchen.

The second option is high gloss Laminate... by using a squared off edge instead of the rounded edge we were able to get an appearance more like granite. The example I am showing is also from our kitchen.

Option three is porcelain floor tile.

I recently redid my parents kitchen and used 12"x24" floor tiles for countertop. The surface must be prepped properly and be level. It turned out beautifully. Using large tiles minimizes grout lines. I used a grout very close to the tile colour. We only needed 16 tiles for the whole project.
