DIY Custom Pantry Transformation

After two years of struggling with storage space in our existing pantry, we moved the pantry renovation to the top of our "Never ending honey-do-list". We started out with a common ...»
looking pantry with utility wire shelving hidden behind a set of bi-fold doors. But after a little "sweat equity" we transformed the pantry into a custom built-in with adjustable wooden shelves, drawer sliders, and the best part of all, all of the storage that we could ask for! (We're also working on a series of tutorials where we share the plans of how we built the cabinet. Here's the first set of plans: http://www.thediyvillage.com/2013/05/build-a...) #BeforeandAfter #DIY #kitchenpantry

Fix a Sagging Door in 5 Minutes Flat

We had a sagging interior door that was driving us crazy. We had to lift the door knob to get it to latch. We were able to fix it in no time with some cardboard.

  • The table can comfortably seat six w/o the leaf or 8 with the leaf. It looks great with the new plate wall my wife just finished. 1
  • We salvaged the rope molding and the rest of the apron and table legs from an old beat-up table. With a little wood filler, they looked good as new.
  • I stained the top with Rust-oleum's Early American and applied three coats of satin finish polyurethane.
  • The table apron was painted with #ASCP "Old White".

a snazzy boxed wine holder from pallet wood.

I used my table saw a lot for this project, ripping the pallet boards square and to length. I also created thin strips for braces to glue the boards together. The most difficult step was using a dado stack to create a tongue-and-groove so the backside could slide on and off.

Jocie stenciled that beautiful fleur de lis, and she applied a wax finish to seal the wood. I'm really pleased with how this turned out, and I know we'll be showing it off next chance we get.

sure to use heat-treated (HT) pallets rather than ones that have been treated with chemicals. Sanding removes anything on the surface, and waxing the holder afterward provides another layer of protection. Oh, and sorry it took me so long to get back to you.

  • DITRA is a is an uncoupling membrane that allows the tile to move (in-plane) relative to the substrate, eliminating the major causes for cracked and delaminated tile.
  • DITRA is installed over a bed of mortar. It's easy to cut with a utility knife, and seams are butted against each other.
  • The dovetail cut-back cavities are filled with additional mortar, and tile is laid overtop.

Installing Schluter DITRA Tile Underlayment

Recently, I've been following two tile installers, and they swear by Schluter DITRA underlayment. In short, subfloors (plywood, OSB, concrete) move especially with seasonal changes, and ...»
that movement can cause tiles to crack, delaminate or come loose. DITRA is an uncoupling membrane that eliminates the causes of those problems.

DITRA can be used with porcelain or ceramic tile or natural stone, and it's easy to install (when you know how). It can even act as a waterproof barrier when you seal the seams.

Learn more about this great product, and see how the pros install it at the link. #tile #DITRA #Schluter #flooring
