About Me:

I'm a stay at home mom that is always in search of ways to channel my inner Martha Stewart. My children often inspire me to take on certain projects and other times it may be a specific need or just something that I want to do for fun. Either way, I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty and once I see the end result, I'm ready to move on to the next thing.

Under deck system - Rainaway

scope of project - having issues with rains, water coming into the basement. Water draining from the above deck is standing water on basement foundation floor and coming under door. ...»
Warped laminate floor and baseboard and quarter round. Rainaway system diverts water from the deck by catching the water and routing it to a drain.

* Cost Comments:

$350 labor and materials.

Advice:

Do's Research product shop competitive pricing make sure product are equal. Required referrals and go and see product for quality of work. ask for certification such as NARI or bonding Don'ts: accept company brochure as sole evidence of work accept sole bid.

this product clear does what you expect it to do. It displaces the water from the deck away from the basement concrete exterior. It keeps me dry when I go into my home office. Initially we found a leak that was due to the flashing on the deck was not properly caulked. The vendor applied silicone caulk and fixed the problem.

  • shelves from Ikea

Walk in closet shelving and hanging space

I have a walk in closet that is completely empty with no shelves. My husband is not helping me with this and has been promising for years to take care of this. It's time for me to do this myself. I am going to go to Ikea and buy these wire shelves that hang on the wall. It is much simpler then buying wood and drilling into the walls.----

finally something happened. We had a few options at Ikea but everytime we were ready to buy something it ...»

was out of stock. My husband found these shelves and bought some nice wooden "things" to hold the shelves. He still has to install one more and then finish up the hanging space

Advice:

Dont rely on your husband. Take action and get things done.

If you need to paint, do it before you install the shelves. This is a mistake we made. We will try to touch up around the shelves but it makes everything very nerve-racking.

Materials:

4 X wooden shelves - $55.00

Closet Reorganization

My motivation to do this project:

I have shoes and purses that I want to store attractively and I want something more upscale to hang my clothes on that won't break the bank.

I like very long straight panels in windows like yours, covering the lower and upper window ...»
withthe same panel. If you have room to extend the rod 6-8" beyond the wondow frame on the sides away from the fire place, you won't conceal the window and block the natural light. If you would like a sketch, I'll be happy to draw one up for you. Windows like these are always a challenge,

  • Installing Hardibacker sub floor to a wood floor with screws.

New tile bathroom floor.

Remove old tile floor and concrete sub-flooring and replace sub-floor with hardibacker, new tile and toilet. ...»

Advice:

You can do this yourself, it's just a lot of work.

Do back-butter the tile.

Do rent or buy a wet saw if you have more tile projects.

Don't do any of the plumbing if there is an issue.

Was a lot of work tearing out the old concrete tile base. Since it had a wire mesh on the bottom it was easier to tear it out. Next measure and cut hardibacker with a circular saw blade made for cement board. Find the floor studs and screw with the proper type of screw that is coated and protected from moisture. Lay out the first row of tiles and mark with a pencil. Spread out the thin-set and back butter the tile. Once the first row is laid out straight the rest of the tiling is easy. Use a wet saw to cut around the toilet and vanity. Setting the toilet should be easy if your surface does not change more than 1/4 inch. I had to call in a plumber to reset my toilet since the drain pipe was almost an inch higher than the floor, other than that, it was easy to install the toilet.
