About Me:

I moved to AR recently, and with my husband, we are remodeling -slowly- his boyhood home. It was built in 1940. We love it already, but we are upgrading and of course adding our own personalities to it. I appreciate any suggestions you may have when I post my many (I'm sure!) questions over time.... Thank you in advance...

Favorite area of home improvement:

I love it all! I enjoy gardening, both flowers & veggies... and all DIY projects! Also like to draw, paint, do needle work, and mosaics.

Gardening: Is This a Daylily or Something Else?

Hi, this is a (bulb) flower that grows out back. The stalks are very tall (3-4 feet?) and the blooms are about 5-6 inches across. They're beautiful! Please help me identify them. Thank you!

  • I took three old chairs that I found in an alley and pieced them together to make a super unique curvy bench. I used outdoor fabric so that it could be used inside or out.

Three found chairs made into a curvy bench!

I found these three chairs in an alley. I have been hunting three chairs for just exactly this project. These were just exactly what the Dr. ordered for putting this project into action. The arms and legs had to have a little adjustment...but I'm super happy...can't wait to find three more! http://www.dejavuedesigns.com/triple-sitter-... #Bestof2012 ...»

  • I had this kit shipped from Calif to Ala. Son said it was very easy to put together.

Oriental ideas for yard

This is my teahouse, built in one day from a kit. My son asked if I really wanted it in the front yard then decided it looked good once he had it together. I couldn't get a landscaper so have done the landscaping to the rest of front yard myself. Will be posting other pictures.

Evelyn, I LOVE the first statue/fountain. I want to get some art like that for my flowers. ...»
Since the fountain doesn't work anymore, maybe you could plug up the hole (not permanently) and fill it with birdseed --? Or hmmm, maybe the squirrels would just eat it all! The crane is fun too, and the weeping yaupon holly is pretty--never seen one of those!

  • Pillow. Hand stitched needlepoint.
  • Geometric shapes. Wall-hanging. Needlepoint.
  • Mom did this from building the frame, stretching the canvas, to painting.
  • Hand painted vase.
  • Hand painted vase.
  • Two (approx) 5"x5" framed paintings.
  • Not a "match", but Mom needlepointed the chair seat and the pillow.
  • Looking inside her cabinet that displayed a few of the 12 China plates she painted & fired in her kiln. Also painted the blue/gold vase. Others items were bought.
  • Close-up of one of the China plates Mom painted.
  • I saw her draw this over a few days -in pen- while she talked at her home desk on the phone! Truly amazing. Done free hand without a design or picture to go by.
  • Needlepoint wall-hanging. Sorry not all of it is shown!

My Dear Mother's Artwork & Sewing

My mother passed away in February 2008, but over her lifetime she was very prolific artistically. She favored Oriental styles, but also painted & sewed many other things. Hope you enjoy & might be inspired by the few pieces I show here :)

Thank you ladies! I thought these pictures should be shared. Gail, I definitely inherited her ...»
love for it! I love it ALL, like she did. I painted and created mosaics while she was alive, and did do some cross stitch, but now that I'm sewing more & wanting to try needlepoint like she did it, I wish -all the time- I could ask her advice.

I grew up watching her doing all kinds of art (like above) and did learn some things--but wish I'd had more interest then! My favorite part as a kid was sitting next to her while she painted(her biggest love). She was a realism painter & the detail is amazing. We're in the middle of DIY at home so all of her paintings are covered/stored. When I get them out I'll share some of those too. Beautiful work.

I appreciate all of the kind comments-- she was a true talent & a big part of my heart :)

Crafts: Anyone cross-stitch out there? Need help with finished project!!

Just finished a very detailed cross-stitch project. First one I've done this large. Started as a beginner, ended as a pretty accomplished sewer (ha)! The fabric needs to be ironed before ...»
I frame it. After all that work I don't want to mess it up now. I've read how to iron it on the back side, but my question:

There are many tiny beads sew throughout -- is the iron going to hurt them? Any advice? Thank you!!

I used mostly DMC. With some of the colors I ran out too soon. The Hancock (only sewing/fabric ...»
store here) doesn't carry DMC, so I had to use a different brand. I'll check leftover deep-color threads ahead of time to see if they bleed.

And Evelyn.. thank you for the message earlier. I enjoy "talking" with you. I'll send some pics of my mother's art to you! Proud to show them :)
