About Me:

I moved to AR recently, and with my husband, we are remodeling -slowly- his boyhood home. It was built in 1940. We love it already, but we are upgrading and of course adding our own personalities to it. I appreciate any suggestions you may have when I post my many (I'm sure!) questions over time.... Thank you in advance...

Favorite area of home improvement:

I love it all! I enjoy gardening, both flowers & veggies... and all DIY projects! Also like to draw, paint, do needle work, and mosaics.

Crafts: Anyone cross-stitch out there? Need help with finished project!!

Just finished a very detailed cross-stitch project. First one I've done this large. Started as a beginner, ended as a pretty accomplished sewer (ha)! The fabric needs to be ironed before ...»
I frame it. After all that work I don't want to mess it up now. I've read how to iron it on the back side, but my question:

There are many tiny beads sew throughout -- is the iron going to hurt them? Any advice? Thank you!!

Thank you Evelyn! Very kind :) My mother was born in Montgomery btw...went there as a kid a ...»
lot & like it. She also loved oriental art; she painted, needlepointed, even bought a lot of oriental-type furniture! She really enjoyed the style. I did that particular XS for her, a couple of years after she passed away. I wished she could've seen it! :)

Good ideas... I appreciate it. Have a question though. Would the pressing (no iron) be enough to take out the wrinkles? The frame I used wasn't quite big enough and in order to put the two cross bars across the top & bottom, I had to "fold over" gently (with some padded protection) parts of the XS, depending on where I was sewing. You can see this in the picture -the top part is folded over. So this created some wrinkles. What do you think?

Very helpful about the framing, but I have another question:) Is the brown wrapping paper attached TO the XS? Where I get confused with the suggestions of "backing" (please bear with me) is that all frames have that piece of cardboard included. Is that still used? Do you attach the heavy paper to the XS or ? You mentioned gluing it to the frame...? Sorry for bothering you with so many questions... assume I know NOTHING -ha! Cause really, with this, I do not :)

Thank you again!! I appreciate your time helping me.

bathroom mosaic

HI, I have never posted anything on the internet before but am in the middle of a renovating a house and have done so many fun things and wanted to share. I couldn't decide on one type of ...»
tile to surround our claw foot tub so I collected various colors of tile that I liked made a mosaic. I didn't draw it out, just wanted it to look free and flowing. Please excuse the mess in the rest of the picture, had a failed attempt at hanging a chandelier, need to find a smaller one. Oh, we have a farmhouse sink with a sideboard to be used in there also. The whole bathroom will be finished with all re-purposed materials, sink and tub found at junk sales, refinished, mirror found in garbage and repainted, windows off of Craig's List, floors taken out of a foreclosed house and put in by my husband, over the sink light from garage sale. OH and the 2 doors, not shown, are also Craig's List items.

Gardening: Covering tomatoes during a cold snap

Hello... during a few days of spring we bought/planted some sturdy 8-10" high tomato plants. No fruit, no flowering. Then we had 2" of snowfall! Fortunately we covered them (milky colored ...»
heavy plastic & stakes) beforehand & they did well. Snow is gone now, they've been covered 2 days. Yesterday I opened it up for a few hours on one end for air only/no sun. Skies are very cloudy still & rain coming tonight & over next couple of days.

Question: Do I keep them covered --OR NOT? Day temps are only in the high 40s-mid 50s/some wind. When it rains it'll be a cold rain. Are they OK covered up until Monday when temps even out?

Attaching mosaic glass or ceramic to glass window panes??

Hi, I need advice. I'd like to create my own mosaic (glass or ceramic) on the NINE individual 7"x12" window panes in our front door. Has anyone done this? ...»

We were thinking of placing the mosaic (glued) to a board then screwing the board to the INSIDE side of the door, so you'd see the mosaic on the outside of the door. Each 7"x12" window section would be measured out on the board, so only those parts get the mosaic.

I think gluing the mosaic directly to the windows would look strange from the outside because of the glue --? Right? That's why I didn't mention that idea first...

Make sense? Bit hard to explain! :)

Hey ladies! Thanks so much for your ideas Kathleen :) That's great. I haven't done anything ...»
about the door yet... we're remodeling our 1940 house and there's so much to do, I sort of "shelved it" while I thought about what I want to do. But it's really nice to know I can use the Weldbond and it'll dry clear. Sounds like a plan!! Thanks again ;)

Painting: Latex paint on untempered masonite?

If we lightly sand then prime the smooth side of an untempered masonite board and then use latex paint, will it hold the paint? And will the board hold up? We're using untempered masonite to cover up an 1940ish plank-board wall.

Thank you both! Great suggestions. It's a hallway, not a damp environment, so that's good. But ...»
you both gave us some things to think about before starting.....
