About Me:

Retired, living on lake front property. I maintain my own landscape and do as much of my own DIY projects as I can

Favorite area of home improvement:

I'm starting woodworking and want to do woodturning. To date most DIY has been repairs, although I have layed a couple of tile floors, done some drywall, layed sod, etc.

Miracle Lawn Grasses

More parades, more rain......

I'm seeing the annual onslaught of ads for miracle lawn grass seeds that promise to ...»

withstand heavy traffic, resist insects and disease, tolerate shady spots and be green four seasons of the year. The seed mix typically contains annual ryegrass, Kentucky bluegrass and maybe some fine fescue.

In my part of the world there is no way these grasses could survive one summer. I doubt they could meet their claims in any part of the country.

If you want a grass that grows well in your area, contact your local University Extension office and ask their advice.

Their knowledge is far more valuable than a TV or magazine ad.

I have found that where the weather is warm use warm season grasses like Bermuda, Centipede or ...»
Zoysia. This is my second Zoysia lawn and I love the grass. I thought the Emerald Zoysia was mch prettier than the El Toro that I put in this time. It also seemed to avoid weed infestation better. If you are in a cooler climate, use the cool season grasses such as fescues. I haven't been able to convince the people around me here in North Carolina because they don't like the tan lawn in the winter (no mowing), but they pay for it in the summer when the try to keep it alive.

I was recently in Seattle, I know this a different atmosphere, where a man had a whole lawn ...»
that was moss. It almost looked like grass, but he didn't need to cut it. The moss lawn was his way of coping with a lawn that would not grow because tof the shade. You're right , they do make beautiful spaces.

Although the lat slants away from the driveway, the runoff from all the recent rains have gotten to the clay and parts of the yard are very mushy. I heard about permatill and wonder if ...»

These don't answer my question because there is no other place to channel the water. I'm ...»
going to look at aeration and sand to break up the clay and make the soil more permeable under the sod. I appreciate the information about permatill.
