  • The Lucketts Spring Market is legendary! While it's a 2 day event, the Hometalk Meetup is Sunday, May 19th only. Come Sunday! :)
  • I'm beyond thrilled to get to meet the locals! I'll be gettin' my junk on, ready to demo a DIY or dish up a talk.. whatever you desire!
  • Karen aka The Graphics Fairy will also be in our Hometalk Meetup tent! I fully anticipate her making something super cool with her infamous graphics she offers up on her blog... (for me to take home..) http://graphicsfairy.blogspot.ca/
  • Guess who else will be there... Hometalk's own Miriam! Hmm... maybe I should get HER to build something cool... I like it!
  • Lucketts Store is located in Leesburg, Virginia and houses antiques galore. Come May, they are going to put up the outdoor tents and go KABOOM with vintage junk vendors!
  • Here's a sample from last year. I'm jittery just looking at those letters...
  • Vendor Junxtapostion is going to be bringing their vintage junk inspired jewelry! Oh oh! I want a bracelet that reads JUNKER.
  • And a stamped spoon too please. Surprise me?
  • Miss Mustard Seed will also be there and I'll bet she'll be bringing her line of milk paint along with her... red please!
  • And I could just eat that welcome sign. Gorgeous!!!
  • Dressers always go better with coke crates. 1
  • Lemme at those metal numbers! Have I convinced you this is the event to run to?
  • You have no idea how well this event suits me. Junk is my middle name... http://www.hometalk.com/b/609921/funky-junk-s-projects

  • This quirky, double wide sized pallet wood chair is all decked out, ready for a great summer read.
  • Two pallets, 4 legs and two armrest boards are really all it took. So easy! The trick is to ensure you find two pallets that are similar in size.
  • Let's add more quirk to make it totally yours! This signboard was used as an armrest. Note how wide the board is... perfect for my coffee cup. Priorities here...
  • This leg has an antique level attached. This project is a little like 'Where's Waldo's Wild Additions?'
  • Pallet markings were celebrated by placing them in prominent places. Coffee bean sacks acting like large pillow cases were just tucked in place. No sewing required. 2
  • For the legs, a little bracing was required inside the pallet so the leg had something to stabilize against.
  • Tell me that isn't one big cool chair to curl up in! But let's add some comfort...
  • 5" foam cut to size (new from a foam shop) was key for the ultimate comfort.
  • This is a pallet SOFA I made last year, decked out in total bohemian style craziness. The build is much more size customized: http://www.funkyjunkinteriors.net/2011/08/how-i-built-pallet-sofa-part-2.html

  • Add flowers or interesting twigs.

Mohair Wrapped Vase

Add a little color and texture to a plain vase or jar by wrapping it in twine or yarn. I chose a pretty pale blue mohair yarn to wrap up this little vase. These would be pretty grouped with different types of yarn and texture.

Adding a mudroom to our garage

In our previous home, we didn't have a nice laundry room. It was tiny and stuck in our master bedroom. To help sell our home, we decided to ad a laundry/mudroom inside our two car garage. ...»
It led into our kitchen. We also had a two car detached garage, so there was still plenty of room to park our cars.

We built a small room to hold our washer and dryer, and my husband also built a custom shoe storage bench and coat hangers. I LOVED the shoe storage bench. My four boys would lift up the bench seat and put their shoes in their "box." Best thing we ever did! Hope to do the same thing in our new house some day!

Sweet Home Decor from.... a wire Tomato Cage?

I get a lot of inspiration at the garden center and nursery... especially when it means using something that I find there in a totally new way! Tomato cages, anyone? ...»

I combined just three 'ingredients' - a wire tomato cage, two metal paper clips, and some ivy cuttings - along with some wire cutters and needle-nosed pliers to bend, twist, and wrap up a cute Spring decor accent. When I was done (just a half-hour later), I had created a sweet ivy-covered 'dome'! It's one of my trademark 'Fast, Cheap & Easy' projects, and the tutorial is on the HOMEWARDfound blog! #MayProjects

(PS: coming up in my NEXT blog post, a Mother's Day Luncheon Tablescape that was inspired by this ivy dome!)

  • Simple ingredients
  • Just look at how perfect this mix is.... homemade :)

Make your own Potting Mix

I rarely buy bags of potting soil from the garden center...I just make my own using a few simple ingredients. #garden #composting ...»

Start with compost, add peat, perlite and fertilizer and mix well.

You can buy a big bale of compressed peat and large bag of perlite, depending on how much you need, these could last you quite a few seasons.

The fertilizer could be a slow release formula or a generic all purpose. I add more fertilizer depending on application ( hanging baskets for instance would get a handful more at planting time.

I just get in there with my garden gloved hands and give it a good mixing pulling out any large pieces that need more time to cook in the compost.

Your ratio should be about:

Compost= 60%

Peat= 30%

Perlite=10%

+ a few handfuls or more of fertilizer pending on size of mix.

  • Consider what it carried. I collect pallet wood from a firetruck manufacture. While this cannot guarantee clean wood, it's safer than if it had carried pesticides.
  • How is it treated? HT means heat treated which is safer than chemically treated. Watch for markings on the wood. Avoid any wood that is extremely heavy, stained or has an odour.
  • How to dismantle pallets? It isn't easy! Most nails are twisted and hard to remove but that isn't to say it's impossible. A good crowbar and hammer can do quite nicely but I attempt to find loose wood when possible.
  • Remove the nails asap. Dismantled pallets are FULL of them making them very dangerous. Don't delay this step for safety's sake.
  • There is no guarantee that the wood you are using is clean. Avoid reclaimed lumber in the vegetable garden, where food is served and for children's toys. If in doubt, use new wood.
  • There are even more tips on the original blog post. http://www.funkyjunkinteriors.net/2011/04/all-you-ever-wanted-to-know-about.html

    that some kind of protectant on the wood will make the wood safer is a good call. But there are no guarantees it can't outgas if the wood is treated with chemicals. A 'bonding primer' would probably be a good way to go if you were thinking of painting.
