  • This quirky, double wide sized pallet wood chair is all decked out, ready for a great summer read.
  • Two pallets, 4 legs and two armrest boards are really all it took. So easy! The trick is to ensure you find two pallets that are similar in size.
  • Let's add more quirk to make it totally yours! This signboard was used as an armrest. Note how wide the board is... perfect for my coffee cup. Priorities here...
  • This leg has an antique level attached. This project is a little like 'Where's Waldo's Wild Additions?'
  • Pallet markings were celebrated by placing them in prominent places. Coffee bean sacks acting like large pillow cases were just tucked in place. No sewing required. 2
  • For the legs, a little bracing was required inside the pallet so the leg had something to stabilize against.
  • Tell me that isn't one big cool chair to curl up in! But let's add some comfort...
  • 5" foam cut to size (new from a foam shop) was key for the ultimate comfort.
  • This is a pallet SOFA I made last year, decked out in total bohemian style craziness. The build is much more size customized: http://www.funkyjunkinteriors.net/2011/08/how-i-built-pallet-sofa-part-2.html

pallets and little more. I kid you not! This is the easiest build in the world and you'll wonder why you didn't think of it first!

  • This meetup was a fundraiser to purchase mosquito nets in Africa to help reduce the spread of malaria. It was a life saving cause I was very privileged to be a part of.
  • My part was to host a demo table talking about junk in the garden. Here is a sample I threw together with a burlap sandbag.
  • My sweet little sidekick Teddy helped me prepare some junky toolboxes. Tip: add some rocks, sticks and moss to help enhance your planter boxes. The smallest details add the biggest impact! 1
  • We're here! Everyone learned about the helpful Hometalk community. Isn't it cool you don't require having a blog in order to share here? I sure think so!
  • My table was loaded with junk and plants and a burlap bean sack tablecloth. Let the demo begin!
  • Neighbour Torrie helped to junk up some small kettle planters. Spanish moss was used to cover the soil. They were so cute!
  • Here's how they looked once I set them in the garden... http://www.hometalk.com/1359436/when-old-kettles-turn-into-rock-gardens 1
  • The event was totally sold right out with approx 50 gals in attendance!
  • We even had an African missionary among us! Brenda Tjosvold spoke to us about her 30 years as an African missionary. Her speech was absolutely riveting and had us in stitches for most of the night!
  • There was even African shopping opportunities! Each table was geared to directly help African artists. The craftsmanship was outstanding.
  • This was a dessert event so we had the tastiest treats, decked out in African style. The place was filled with pattern, plants candles and all things Africa. Gorgeous!
  • Go Janice! This gal is an artist and had brainstorm after brainstorm so I loaded her up... I can't wait to see what she creates. :)
  • Hometalk provided the guests with a little challenge of sorts... each were given a rolled up sandbag to encourage creativity. Let's cross our fingers we can show a few creations on Hometalk. Coming soon!
  • The sandbags got a little special branding for the event. Visit the prep of the sandbags at: http://www.funkyjunkinteriors.net/2013/04/a-little-burlap-sandbag-encouragement.html
  • And drumroll...the event purchased 120+ mosquito nets! Hurray!! https://secure.e2rm.com/registrant/TicketingCatalog.aspx?EventID=89272&LangPref=en-CA&Referrer=https%3a%2f%2fsecure.e2rm.com%2fregistrant%2fsessionExpired.aspx%3feID%3d892

Debi T, I found the sandbags at ...»
my local small hardware store. I have never seen them for sale at a larger chain. Perhaps ask the local guys if they can bring them in?

I also find bean bag sacks at a coffee roaster place. Check a smaller coffee house in your area, they probably throw them out!

As for burlap material, most fabric stores sell it by the bolt. Lots to be had.

    I hope you find some!

  • Kick your rock gardens up a notch and plant them in something instead. I chose a collection of old kettles. Loving the elevation and junky detail!
  • My little helper Teddy was busy scoping out the area. Approved! Whew... don't mess with a cat I say. 5
  • Each kettle got two rock garden plants, plus were further enhanced with some sticks and stones for a truer rock garden feel.
  • Please don't ask me what these pretty plants are, I'm not a label reader at all (gasp!) but you're welcome to tell ME if YOU know! 2

I adore working in the garden. Silent therapy in the sunshine while creating... doesn't get much better than that! ...»

Part of my Hometalk Meetup / Out of Africa event was doing something gardenish with junk. So I set about creating little rock gardens inside old kettles. Once I got them home, I found a perfect little corner for the small group.

The tea can wait... I want to plant more!

What's your favourite junky planter to use? I'd love more ideas!

  • Hydrangeas can look like this all year around. I love using them because their blooms are so abundant and quickly brighten up spaces.
  • The best time to harvest is in the fall when the petals start to get slightly crispy. You want some of the moisture content diminished for this to work best.
  • And here's the secret. Set your blooms in water, and leave them be until the water is evaporated. The flowers will then be dried out. The water keeps the petals in their original shape.
  • It's best to leave the booms right where you display them so they don't crumble once brittle.
  • I came across this secret tip by accident. I couldn't figure out why my cut hydrangeas looked awesome AFTER they ran out of water, until I saw this post: http://www.thevspotblog.com/2011/05/drying-hydrangeas-its-so-easy.html
  • You can also display them without the water IF the petals are dry enough beforehand. Here's how I displayed hydrangeas in an old dresser... http://www.funkyjunkinteriors.net/2012/09/dried-hydrangea-dresser-outdoors.html
