A new kitchen inspired by an ad from 1959

I love my mid-century house by the beach, but I've always regretted the fact that the previous owners ripped out the original kitchen and put in one of those characterless and cheap ...»
oak-trimmed laminate kitchens that for some inexplicable reason were so popular in the 1980s. When I finally bit the bullet and decided to re-do the kitchen, I wanted to create something that was appropriate to the house and found my inspiration in a 1959 ad for a Hotpoint kitchen. It was both practical (tiled walls) and handsome, with a great punch of color from a tiled accent wall containing the turquoise (!) wall oven. While I ultimately decided a wall oven wouldn't work for me, and I went for the durability of stainless (the salt in the air is tough on things here at the beach), I think I've ended up the with a kitchen that honors the inspiration, and my home's history.

Paper Bag Floors

If you are in need of new flooring but don't have much money to spend (or even if you do) then this fits the bill! I created this floor out of brown paper, Elmers glue, stain and ...»
polyurethane. It was easy to do (albeit time consuming) and is very durable. This room is 10 X 12 and cost about $80, but future rooms will cost about $30 since I have plenty of leftover supplies. • This is an example of an EPA "Firm Certification" that anyone working in a pre-1978 home must possess.
  • There are several DIY lead test kits, such as the D-Lead kit shown here.

What's the deal with lead based paint, and why should anyone be concerned?

Maybe you've seen the warnings on paint sticks, or read an article someplace. "Use caution when sanding or disturbing lead based paint." Is it all a lot of hype? I have to argue as a ...»
contractor, that no, it really is not. While many people make a choice to simply ignore lead paint warnings, there could always be consequences to that decision. For instance, a friend did a large DIY reno a few years back, knocking walls down in an older home. As a direct result, his children have elevated blood lead levels.

When exposed to lead dust, children can develop behavior and learning problems (such as hyperactivity), slowed growth, hearing problems, and aggressive patterns of behavior. Stopping a child's exposure to lead from leaded paint, house dust, or any other source is the best way to prevent the harmful effects of lead. There are risks to adults as well.

Recently, the EPA put in place a rule that states anyone who is performing painting, renovation, or repairs in homes built pre-1978 must be certified to perform such work in a lead safe manner. If you hire anyone to work in your pre-1978 home, consider asking them for credentials to ensure that they will take the safety of you and your family into account. Likewise, anyone performing DIY projects is advised, but not required to, test for the presence of lead and take appropriate precautions for safety.

thought. It would really help if paint centers provided more information on lead safety! For the DIY crowd, and for those hiring a contractor alike! As someone who follows the EPA RRP rule, I desire that more homeowners were aware of its existence. The EPA has done a terrible job of providing education on the rule. It would be nice to see some of the money we pay to be certified recycled back into awareness campaigns that target consumers. What better place than a home/ paint store to meet that goal?

In my humble opinion, the pros are that you will save the markup and fees that you would ...»
otherwise pay a general contractor. The cons are that you will be assuming every responsibility for planning, coordinating, scheduling, selections, deliveries, overseeing, and warranting the build. To ensure success, you have to have a well rounded knowledge of the technical and legal aspects of the endeavor. If you do not have any previous experience in the building industry, I would not advise it at all.

When you hire the right general contractor, you hire someone who will be your coach throughout the process and who also brings the right team of subcontractors to the table. Well worth the money if you ask me. It only takes one major misstep along the way to completely negate all the money you are saving by doing the job yourself.

That said, if you can assume the job of running your own project, and pull it off, it can be a hugely rewarding experience at the end of the day. I would start by really identifying exactly why you want to take on the task. If you know anyone personally who has walked through it, that would be a good next step to get feedback.

are not a lot of parts you can easily disassemble. The handle will come off if the small set screw at the base comes loose. There is usually a cover that slips on first, then the handle will slip on next. Perhaps the set screw is part of your issue?

    Hi Jackie, ...»

Have you considered using an aftermarket cabinet product line such as Rev-A-Shelf? They have customizable solutions for this type of installation that might be somewhat easier to work with. i.e. spice rack pullouts, racks for the back of doors, etc.

  • Only this end of the cabinet is tilting at the top.
  • You can see the composite piece of wood that is bending - and that there's no support/or attached to the wall near this end.

Home Maintenance & Repairs: Cabinet bowing out at top on one end

I'm in a 10-year-old condo, with a long set of kitchen cabinets on one wall that's set in the corner on the right, but only has wall support on the left (where it meets the refrigerator - ...»
but doesn't go above it - see photos). The set closest to the refrigerator is tilting about two inches away from the wall at the top. It looks like some particle/composite 2 by 4 is bending (no screws or nails are pulling out of the wall - just looks like the composite wood isn't strong enough - or the cabinet wasn't attached properly to the wall at the end). Without rehanging the cabinets, was wondering if any experts had a DIY/easier fix to secure this set of cabinets.

It's a result of the low grade cabinet construction, I'm afraid. A loaded cabinet will start ...»
to bow and pull away from the wall if it is not built well or secured properly. I would suggest finding all the suds available behind the cabinet (try to reach above and probe with a nail or use a stud finder). After that, as James and KMS outlined, add a new wood mounting rail inside the cabinet. While pushing the cabinet back to the wall, secure it with screws into the studs and also through the side of the cabinet into the new mounting rail.

Use a masonry hammer with a pointed chisel end. It works well to knock off large lumps. You ...»
can also use a grinder to clean it off, but I would use caution with something like that. As designing Home says, an acid wash will also work on finer stains and residue. You can find such a cleaner at a building material (stone and brick) or landscape supply house typically. They should be able to suggest tips for use as well.
