About Me:

California girl, author, fashion designer, wedding expert, baker (and dare I say cook!), DIYer, and crafter fueled by non-fat mochas with whipped cream. Once upon a time I thought it was a big deal to hang a photo...now I am ready to tackle just about any home project. I have overseen the updating of our current home for the last 7 years - most of which I did myself. Now that we are almost done we are moving...yeah a new project!

Favorite area of home improvement:

Being outside makes my heart sing...I have laid stone, built a deck and am constantly revamping the landscape.

Cleaning with Vinegar

I used to use vinegar just for taking the sting our of my sunburn, but now that I am an adult (and wear sunscreen) I love using vinegar to clean everything! I have recently have ditched ...»
the rest of my cleaning supplies and made up a few formulas of vinegar cleaners, including some lemon scented ones!

With just some cleaning vinegar, water, and a spray bottle, there is a world of possibilities to clean naturally and economically. Add in some essential oils for a different scent and also mix it with baking soda for a scrubber!

Mopping With Vinegar - Safe For Most Floor Types & Tips For Success

Mopping your floors with Vinegar is safe for most all floor types including wood floors. You should NOT use it on marble or stone though as it will cause it to "pit". Vinegar is a natural ...»
disinfectant and not to mention that you can save money on buying the expensive cleaners.

To get started make sure to sweep your floor thoroughly before mopping. Mopping a floor with crumbs still on it can cause the starches in the crumbs to turn to gluten and create spots that are very difficult to clean. Mix together 1/4 cup of white vinegar with a 1 quart of water in your bucket. Mop in small sections and when you need to rinse your mop try to rinse it in the sink before putting it back into your vinegar solution so you are not putting the dirt into the clean solution. Allow the floor to air dry and when it's dry, it should be streak free with no vinegar odor. Be sure that you wring your mop well - standing water can damage wood floors.

White vinegar doesn't smell pretty but it isn't toxic for you. You can add a few drops of essential oils and not only will it make your vinegar smell better it will also increase the disinfection power.

Another idea is to make one of these citrus vinegar solutions:

Orange Vinegar Cleaner

Lemon Vinegar Cleaner

Grapefruit Vinegar Cleaner

Remove Mildew Smell From Towels

My husband is very good at remembering lyrics, especially theme songs from television shows and commercial jingles from his youth. One of his personal favorites to sing is the theme song from The Beverly Hillbillies. "Let me tell y'all a story 'bout a man named Jed. A poor moutaineer, barely kept his family fed..." I prefer the few times I can get him to sing the theme song ...»
from the Love Boat. "Love, exciting and new. Come aboard, we're expecting you..." It is my own fault that he won't sing it more often, because I laugh hysterically every time and he feigns indignation.

DIY Draino

better for the environment, kid & pet safe

Here's the how to:

- Sprinkle about 1/4 cup of baking soda into your drain, then pour about 1 cup of white vinegar on top of it

- While the above mixture is doing its' thing, boil a whole teapot of water. Once it's done (should be at least 7-10 minutes), go ahead and pour that whole pot ...»

of water slowly into your drain (remember, your drain is clogged so it'll take a while to go down)

- For extra drain declogging, poke a skewer all up in your drain to help push things down. I do this particularly to break up all the hair I may or may not rinse down there.

That's it! So easy, so inexpensive, and no scary chemicals.
