Areas of Expertise

Comprehensive design and quality construction of anything extraordinary that's outdoors. My company specializes in creating enticing Sanctuary Gardens and Outdoor Havens that provide lush, relaxing, beautiful & functional surroundings for the entire family's enjoyment. My projects blend with their surroundings and feel naturally perfect! They are built organic, green and support wildlife, diversity and healthy living. They also include hardscapes, outdoor living areas and room additions that blend with the landscape. Many people say my projects truly exhibit the woman's touch: creative, artistic, colorful and finely detailed.... so rarely seen in the recent "outdoor living area" craze dominated by bold hardscapes that seem to yell "look at me" rather than "wow, this place feels good". I'm a landscape architect who is also a garden designer, horticulturist, artist and contractor who's been in the landscape business since 1975. My husband/business partner is the company's project manager for construction. He's a licensed general contractor and residential designer with over 35 years experience in everything related to home construction. Yes, we make a great team and look forward to assisting you on your next project!

Service Area

Mostly inside perimeter, hugging northend of perimeter, NE Atlanta to Lake Lanier especially along and between I-85 and GA400. Contact us for more details

Gardening: How to improve a garden

Hi, I have a small part of the yard, around 250 SF that is based above a garage (the land above the garage is around one foot high).

It's a bit neglected. Any ideas how I can make it look nice?

Treat this as the "roof garden" that it is. Use only lightweight soil mixes and shallow rooted ...»
plants. For inspiration, visit the roof garden at Atlanta City Hall or one of the many other ones around Atlanta

Gardening: My yard must be possessed by demons because my flowers don't bloom anymore. The daffodils haven't bloomed for 2 or 3

years (had one bloom this year -- transplanted AND planted new ones in the fall of 2011, fertilized, etc.), last yr my irises had maybe 2 blooms and had about the same with my tiger ...»
lilies and day lilies. The green parts of the daffodils are still up and my irises' green parts are up and the lilies are coming along. The irises show no signs of their planning to bloom and some neighbors' are already blooming nicely. I want to transplant all of them and the lilies need lots of thinning out. I'm sure if I do that now, it's not the right time, but since I don't anticipate any blooms, anyway, it seems like it would do no harm, and since all of the green parts are visible, I'll know what I'm digging up. Is this a horrible idea? And what can I add to the soil to make them bloom? My fertilizer and bone meal added to the daffodils did no good. :-( BTW, I don't get a lot of sun, but it's about the same as it's been for a few years now when the flowers DID bloom.

In our area, Louise, bed prep and raised beds will make a major difference in the performance ...»
of your bulbs, annuals and perennials. You will have great success with Mr. Natural CLM that you can purchase from Ashe Simpson on Peachtree Industrial and other fine/locally-owned garden centers. Aside from that, your lack of sun is also contributing to your lack of flowers. The bulbs had "energy" in them when you bought them that has slowly dwindled because with lack of sun, they can't "recharge" themselves. Those aren't horticulture terms by far, but I hope it communicates. You might to consider a landscape consultation to help you determine the specific concerns for your site. The amount of "shade" you have is difficult to determine unless the site is actually seen. Light shade is OK for daffodils but daylilies and iris need sun. Hope that helps.

  • Butterflies on Lantana "Mozelle"

Watch this video of butterflies in the garden. You can enjoy this in your yard THIS SUMMER if you plan now/plant soon!

These are swallowtail butterflies in my garden on Lantana "Mozelle". I use it whenever I'm creating a perennial garden or enlivening a boring landscape of hollies and juniper (you've seen ...»
that and I know, you know, what I mean!) Just like the more common "Ms. Huff" Lantana, this one is perennial in Atlanta and grows to about 5''x5'. WOW! In just 2 years it will be that size. Planted just after the frost date of spring, it will be 3'x3' in only the first summer!!!! Well, I can only promise that IF it's planted in a well draining raised bed such as the special organic soil mix we use on all raised beds that we build. I use Mozelle whenever the color palette is pink/fuschia/blue/purple/yellow/white and the bolder Ms. Huff when the surrounding colors will be bolder such as orange/red/gold. In either case, this is the perfect addition if you're looking for 6 months of color, easy or no maintenance, drought tolerance and a plant that attracts wildlife. You'll not only see butterflies visiting but also bees, hummingbirds and beneficial insects. I think it's the perfect plant and that's why I use it in just about all of the designs I install for sunny gardens.

Ron, that sounds so amazing! What an incredible memory. Try adding some plants that will ...»
support the entire life cycle of the butterfly such as parsley, dill, fennel and asclepias/milkweed. These are called "host" plants or larvae food plants.

Schroeder Design/Build creates a laundry room to literally hang in

Would you ever have thought a laundry room could be so fun? Here is a testimonial from our client ...»

Saturday night our daughter clebrated her 14th birthday, by having 12 girls spend the night......all was going well, loud and rowdy with the occasional scream, then silence. I waited before I walked down stairs, so I would not look like an over protecting mom. I cautiously walked downstairs, to my surprise there were no girls. I walked down the hall. The door to the laundry room was closed, but the light was on.

As I approached the door I could hear a voice or two, as I opened up the door, much to my surprise all 13 girls are in my laundry room. I asked, "Why are you all in my laundry"? They shouted "we love your laundry room it's so bright, cool and welcoming....not to mention there was a fair amount of food"

Plant Labels - Part 2

I recently asked for ideas about making attractive plant labels http://www.hometalk.com/activity/143625 and I got several ideas. I liked to look of the "bottle on a stick"...but I ...»
don't have any small bottles. I also liked the "cork on a wire" idea...but I'm no good at lettering.

Visiting the tile section of my local big box store, I found a large assortment of glass tiles...the perfect size for plant labels. I had some very stiff wire (the kind used to hang suspended ceilings), the end of which I bent into a loop. I glued a loop to the back of each tile using silicone adhesive.

After letting it set for 48 hours, I used my P-Touch label maker to make self-adhesive labels to affix to the front of the tiles.

I like the look!

My watermelon looking propane tank

Our propane tank is small since it only is used for our fireplace. The propane tank was rusted and unsightly. I painted it to look like a watermelon with a ladybug on top. It is in the shade all the time, so no danger of overheating due to paint.

If in sufficient sun and fertilized to encourage strong stems, they should stay straight.

  • Camellia x 'Ack-Scent' in Danna Cain's garden in Atlanta

Looking for fragrance and color to fill a part shady spot in your landscape?

I love Camellia x 'Ack-Scent'! Since it blooms so late in the "winter" or so early in the "spring", it's flowers are rarely damaged by freezes.
