The drill bit that comes with the Squeeeeek No More kit is really fantastic for finding the joist. What you described is basically what they made. It has a long smooth section (3 inches) then 4 threads at the end that will catch the joist. The cool part is that if you hit a joist the drill will reverse itself.

think. The door is not level causing the door to swing towards the opposite side of the way its leaning. Some open some close. Unless you're willing to remove the door frame the only method to correct this is to bend the pin in the hinge slightly. If it slows the movement but does not stop, do another hinge the same way. The friction caused by the bent hinge will prevent it from moving.
