Union Jack Master Bedroom

A year after my first full room makeover (ever!), I decided it was time to redo the master bedroom (again). This needed to be small budget, big impact, and I think I succeeded! I used an ...»

  • These are the doors with hardware removed before painting.
  • During painting. I used latex satin paint and about 1/4 cup of plaster of paris added to 1/2 of the quart of paint. You can add some water to thin a bit. It takes 2 coats, but covers everything. No priming needed.
  • After paint dries, i distress edges with sand paper and then use the clear wax all over and add a bit of the dark wax to some areas. Let dry and buff with rag.
  • Here it is in the den. Not bad for $5.99. 1

Painting: First time home buyer here. I close tomorrow! Yikes!

That said- the house is currently painted a nice, 'safe', beige with some maroon accents. Beautiful yes, but I want to do something completely different.. Simply because I CAN. ...»

The first pic is my master bath. I want to paint the walls a dark grey. I think it would look fab with the white tile/trim. However, I do not currently have plans of changing the cabinets, which are wood. Is this going to look ridiculous?

Same issue with the kitchen.. The previous owner has blue laminate counters (which I want to change, SOMEDAY), and a darker blue tile backsplash. IMO it does not mesh with the cabinet color, or the current wall color. What I want to change right now: I'm going with a wayyy lighter grey in the living spaces/kitchen/etc (with a smokey blue accent wall in living room)

So. Is going to a cooler nuetral color going to be painful to look at with the warm cabinet colors? A kitchen remodel is in my 5 year plan but not tomorrow.

Thanks fellow hometalkers :)

Painted Wood Floor

I have hated my parquet floor since we moved into this home, and finally decided to take matters into my own hands. I started by sanding the entire surface. Then I painted the entire ...»
floor with 2 coats of white paint, sanding in between coats. Be sure to let the paint dry between coats. Next, I painted the entire floor with a cream colored paint and let it dry. Finally, I handpainted the squares...each square is 4 of the little parquet squares together. After all of the paint dried, I sanded the entire floor for a worn, cottagy look.
