Painting: I am searching for a paint color by Valspar that has been discontinued. My chips don't match, and Valspar site no help.

Any suggestions how to get the correct mix? It is a few years old, and the original is on the walls, but no can left. Valspar 4002 1 blue balance. I have tried matching with Behr, ...»
Valspar, and Taylors new paint. No luck so far. Everyone says I need to original mix.

Tim has the right idea. Sometimes there is enough of a piece of painted wall behind a switch ...»
or outlet cover to be cut off and used for color/sheen matching.

How to negotiate bids?

I have recently received two bids for the following: a) blacktoping my existing gravel drive and b) adding a third driveway lane on east side of existing drive then blacktop total area. ...»
The two companies are not at all close in their bids ($1600+ difference on option "a" alone) for the same details offered on bid A. Both companies had the same fee to complete option B. Is it okay to ask the highter priced company why they are so much higher? Shouldn't the bids state offered guarentees and expectation of completion times? Or is that on the final contract only? A lot of novice questions here - I'm wanting to approach this the right way and enter into the best contract that I possibly can while covering any "what ifs". Any additional feedback would be appreciated!

A contract is supposed to be a meeting of the minds. Unfortunately it is the HO chore to do ...»
the research to know what they want.

Maybe do some research on their past clients jobs, the grades material, procedures ect..

Don't depend on warantees. Be sure the job will be done right the first time.

    Probably not best to rush.

My watermelon looking propane tank

Our propane tank is small since it only is used for our fireplace. The propane tank was rusted and unsightly. I painted it to look like a watermelon with a ladybug on top. It is in the shade all the time, so no danger of overheating due to paint.

Home Maintenance & Repairs: Calling all electricians - please help! What's a fair market rate?

To the electricians out there . . . I'm very concerned that my electrician is using some unfair pricing practices. ...»

Example #1 - Charge of $250 for $20 electrical permit for the garage.

Examples #2 - Charge of $350 for $75 electrical permit for house addition

Example #3 - Cost to supply and install floor boxes (work involved removing old box, installing new box, cutting floor board of new wood floor) - $210/each

Example #4 - Jacuzzi Tub (unclear why the high rate for one plug/outlet) $195

Example #5 - New meter/200 AMP main disconnet, remove old panel/meter and refeed via J-Boxes $2,250. While this might be within range, he has charged an additional $1,100 for 'demo work and power and wiring checks.

Can you please share with me your pricing guidelines and advice? Thank you.

The only way for you to feel like you get a fair price, is for you to get 3 prices from electricians in your area. You will need to define the job. I understand that is difficult for the homeowner to do, but is required if you are going to compare apples for apples.

  • rotted sheathing and heavy mold growth on joists

A new mold project my crew and I will be working on the next six weeks.

This is an example of just how bad mold can get in a very short period of time. Entire flooring system, sub-floors, main floor, tile must come out on entire lower level of home. This is a ...»
real important issue. The poor client is not covered by insurance as most people are not.

Check your home owners insurance to see if you can add a rider just to cover yourself.

I will post progress photos as we move along the next six weeks.

I too think it is the smell of a dead mouse you are experiencing.

Often they will borough into flex-duct and die (I have seen one half way in and half way out.)

    It's a terrible smell!

Remodeling: Sunroom remodel questions

Our house in Norfolk, VA has an aluminum sunroom with a sloping roof. It was built over a deck and a tiled floor was installed. It has heat/air vents connected to the main house. We want ...»
to make it more cozy to use as a tv room by installing carpet and insulated/privacy window treatments. What are your thoughts? How do we hang window treatments & what kind on aluminum? Also, the two sunlights in the roof (not shingle) leak. How expensive is it to replace them or take them out and seal up that part of the roof? I'm not sure when the sunroom was added, but I suspect we should have the support beams checked to see if they are strong enough. Who do we get to do that honestly that won't just saying work needs to be done in order to get business? Concrete bricks were stacked under room to provide more support about 8 yrs ago. Thoughts? Recommendations?

Like Dan said; this is something that a person needs to look at to come to any sort of conclusion.

And, with 3 conclusions, you will be able to make the decisions you are looking for.

Wood ones are going to be expensive and will probably be custom made. You may find a shop that ...»
    still makes them on Google.

HD and Lowes sells vinyl shutters for about 45 a set. Not heard of too many grades of vinyl shutters. Different widths, thicknesses, profiles, ect.

    but only one grade vinyl.
