  • Don't leave your tomatoes hanging around defenseless. Plant a few of these great companions to help your veggies fend off insects. 2
  • 1. Basil. Helps repel thrips, flies and mosquitos. Excellent companion for tomatoes and peppers.
  • 2. Sage. Repels cabbage moths and flea beetles. Flowers are great for attracting bees and other beneficial insects.
  • 2. Lemon Catnip. Brew tea from its leaves and spray on plants to drive away flea beetles.
  • 4. Lemon Balm. Citronella compounds in its leaves do a wonderful job of repelling insects. Safe to rub on your skin as an organic mosquito repellent. 1
  • 4. German Chamomile improves oil production in herbs and improves flavor of onions and cabbage. You can also brew tea from its flowers.
  • 5. Scented marigolds keep the soil free of nematodes and attract beneficial insects like ladybugs.
  • 6. Nasturtiums make a great barrier around tomato plants, deterring squash bugs and trapping aphids. Nasturtium leaves and flowers are edible, making them a great addition to salads. 1
  • 7. Geraniums repel cabbage worms and Japanese beetles.
  • 8. Petunias repel leafhoppers, aphids, tomato worms. Like catnip, tea brewed from its leaves can be sprayed on your plants as an organic insecticide.
  • 9. Rosemary repels bean beetle, cabbage fly, cabbage moth and carrot fly.
  • 10. Mints deter white cabbage moths, ants, flea beetles, fleas and aphids. Make your own mint mulch and add to beets, giving them the benefits without the danger of invasive mint roots. 3
  • Example: Two tomato plants surrounded by a beneficial herb barrier including basil, oregano and rosemary. 2
  • Example: Tomato planted with marigold and basil companions.

  • While at the nursery, we picked up a tub of the little aphid-munching companions...
  • ...and set about introducing them to the garden. The gnome approves.
  • Tip 1. They will be thirsty. Wet your plants down in advance.
  • Tip 2. Ladybugs don't fly at night. Releasing them later in the day increases the chance that they will climb local plants and seek shelter closer to home.
  • Tip 3. They will be hungry. If you don't have a readily available aphid population (fingers crossed you do not) mix up some ladybug food: a tiny bit of brewer's yeast and sugar water sprayed on your plants.

  • Our patio went from boring to inviting!
  • This is what our patio looked like after we pulled off the tape. It make a huge difference in this space.
  • We power washed the cement and than filled in the cracks with cement filler.
  • After the cracks were all filled and dried we then primed the patio with mold resistant primer.
  • After the primer dried we painted the patio porch and floor oil paint. This will be the color of the painted lines.
  • After the base color dried we taped off the patio before putting on the final paint color.
  • We painted with the red color over the cream and tape. Once the paint dried we pulled off the tape to create the lines for the tiles.

  • The stove is my favorite part. 1959 GE stove FREE from Craigslist. The chandelier was $2 at a yard sale. The mirror is an unconventional "pop" of contrast above the stove. 5
  • The cabinets are a little wonky as they tend to be in old farmhouses so we covered it with a painters drop cloth.
  • Collections
  • The flooring was bought on sale at Lowes. Peel and stick tiles that we did ourselves.
  • Glass knobs from Hobby Lobby on sale for $1 each
  • I added an old broken top from a mirror above the window.
  • My kitchen island was a cabinet pulled out from curbside, given a fresh coat of paint, glass knobs and a marble top {Also a great score on Craigslist}.
  • Cake plate collection lines the upper cabinets.
