I am a new homeowner (1yr) and I am looking to improve small things in my new home like, repainting some walls, buying appliances, landscaping the backyard, and of course making my "woman cave". I am open to suggestions and ideas.

I gather that you are asking for demo advice? It looks like you are on the right track with the hammer, but you could probably use a bigger one. The hammer drill won't really help in this case, unfortunately. If you really want to use a tool you might look into renting a "roto hammer" or small "demo hammer". Those tools have a chisel point that will demo the brick quickly. You can usually rent one for $30-50/ day.
Becky asks a good question as well. The brick surround will definitely be affected by what you are doing, so plan ahead! You may also encounter cement under the brick hearth which could need patching prior to installing a new hearth floor.
