Japanese maple this year not doing well

In 2012, we had may type warmth in march that was followed up with hard freezes in April. At the time, it looked like most of the maple leaves were burnt and they didn't bloom very well. ...»
This year, we had a much more stable warming phase and where the maple bloomed it looks great. But look at how big the dead branch section is :( the sticks appear to dead and dry. I'm not sure if I should prune them off or see how they do next year. If I prune them, I'll only have half a tree left.

I'll leave the tree alone this year to see what happens. If it does this again next year, I ...»
may have to prune it off.

Garden bench put to use

Last year, I published pictures on hometalk of a small outdoor bench I built. This year, my wife finally found a way to put if to good use. She also took 2 of the three arborvitaes we had ...»
in pots and planted them by the bench. The sandstone pieces were from a slab that we broke off into three pieces by picking up the side, and dropping it on a cinder block. This worked surprisingly well.

  • This quirky, double wide sized pallet wood chair is all decked out, ready for a great summer read.
  • Two pallets, 4 legs and two armrest boards are really all it took. So easy! The trick is to ensure you find two pallets that are similar in size.
  • Let's add more quirk to make it totally yours! This signboard was used as an armrest. Note how wide the board is... perfect for my coffee cup. Priorities here...
  • This leg has an antique level attached. This project is a little like 'Where's Waldo's Wild Additions?'
  • Pallet markings were celebrated by placing them in prominent places. Coffee bean sacks acting like large pillow cases were just tucked in place. No sewing required. 2
  • For the legs, a little bracing was required inside the pallet so the leg had something to stabilize against.
  • Tell me that isn't one big cool chair to curl up in! But let's add some comfort...
  • 5" foam cut to size (new from a foam shop) was key for the ultimate comfort.
  • This is a pallet SOFA I made last year, decked out in total bohemian style craziness. The build is much more size customized: http://www.funkyjunkinteriors.net/2011/08/how-i-built-pallet-sofa-part-2.html

Pest Control: Honey bee problems already

Last year, I had to deal with yellow jackets. This year, it's honey bees. I've been wondering why so many were checking out my brick home and now I know why. I discovered at least 3 holes ...»
chewed through the mortar. I also discovered one main hole which was one of the holes inside of the brick near the basement window. I've used concrete caulk to fill in the holes with the bees inside of them and today, used pest block expanding foam for the brick. I'm trying to buy time as I called today to have the house sprayed for bees. I also found a hole they chewed in a 2x4 in my garage. Gods little creatures are really starting to piss me off.

This is the best picture I have of the bees I'm battling. I can say that the bees are not ...»
nearly as aggressive as yellow jackets. I've been filling up all the holes I find both in wood and mortar until they spray the house. The holes are about pencil eraser size. After looking on YouTube, I see there are mason bees but those are native to France.

  • The solar light was almost the same size as the jar ring
***UPDATE Don't hot glue gems to the outside, they may fall off :(
  • This is after glued flat sided gems around the jar ring and around the little edge on the bottom of the clear part of the light. This little part was where the cylinder and spike were to put the light into the ground.

Another Solar Light In A Jar

A big thank you to Melissa @ Keep Calm and Decorate for inspiring me to make solar lights in jar. This is my twist on your ...»
idea, THANKS again for your inspiration

I found solar lights at Walmart that were pretty much the same size as the top of a canning jar. I bought a box of a dozen clear generic canning jars at Walmart. And I bought bags of flat florist gems at the dollar store.

I removed the cylinder with the ground spike from the solar light and put a thin line of clear silicone caulk around the outside of the jar ring then put the light on top. After the caulk dried attach flat florist gems around the jar ring and around the little edge at the bottom of the clear shade of the solar light. Then I threw in about 50 florist gems inside the jar for stability outside along my wall. I wanted to use red gems but they didn't have any. Next trip to the Dollar Store :)

How do I discard old gasoline?

Does anyone know a safe way to discard old gasoline? I tried burning it in my fire pit but that didn't work too well.

  • We bought the pots at Lowes, but if you already have pots that would work, you could probably make this for less than $25... 1
  • The fountain is basically two pots stacked together with a pump. We used a combination of large and small rocks to hold everything in place.
  • We love to sit on our porch and listen to the water. During the summer, we have several different types of birds that visit and it is so cute to watch them "bathe" in the fountain.
