  • Use 1/4 inch painters tape as your "grout" The horizontal stripes are 2 inches apart and the vertical stripes are random.
  • I suggest you take out all your paint colors at once, with a separate brush for each, so you can fill in randomly and as you go.

DIY faux tile backsplash

I created a faux tile backsplash with leftover paint... and a lot of patience.

How to: ...»

- First up, I bought 1/4 inch painters tape on Amazon.com because it is not sold in stores ($10)

- Second, I picked my colors. I used 4 colors from around my house that I already had leftover paint for and then picked up2 test pots of paint (both Martha Stewart textured metallic to add some depth, $7 each).

- I taped off and primed the area for my backsplash, then painted the whole area a pure white (which acts as the "grout")

- Next, once the paint was dry and set, I used a laser level to tape off horizontal stripes two inches apart. Then I randomly placed my vertical tape lines, making sure none of them lined up or looked too planned out. The more random the better.

- Finally, I filled in all my squares with paint. I painted all of the colors all at once so I could fill in spots as needed- this was random as well, I just took care to try and avoid having the same color next to itself.

won't have to crack out tile and grout and half of your wall in the process... been there! Using what colors you had on hand was a great idea; you are guaranteed to have it coordinate with the rest of the space, it's responsible and thrifty!

Easy lampshade makeover with a thrift store sweater!

Since it's been on my mind to create a cozy cable knit sweater lampshade I headed to the Thrift Store and found this pretty winter white sweater that I knew was perfect for my shade. It's ...»
not cable knit, but the poms caught my eye. And it was only $2.99. Score.

To turn it into a lampshade, I pulled the sweater down over the top of the shade in the same fashion as putting a pillow case over an overstuffed pillow. It was tight, but tight is good in this scenario. The sweater was a ladies size small, but it had enough stretch in it to fit snugly around the shade when I pulled it down around it. I pulled the waistline of the sweater right down to the bottom edge of the shade so it was even all around, then trimmed off the excess material at the top, leaving about 1" all around. Then I secured the sweater around the top edge of the shade with a few dots of hot glue. It's so tight around the shade that I didn't even bother gluing around the bottom. If your sweater is larger than your lampshade, you should be able to just cut it up the back and pull it tight, then glue it down the seam.

And that was it, folks!

The end result is SO simple and beautiful in my sunroom. I love the winter white addition to my room. This is my way of #KeepingCozy in 2013!

Organize Earrings using a vegetable steamer!

I've seen earrings sweetly displayed on vintage cheese graters, but I needed something to hang on the wall! When I found this vegetable steamer at a local thrift shop I knew I had found my new way to organize my earrings... at $.99 I couldn't beat the price!
