About Me:

Originally from Michigan, I moved to Colorado in 1991 to be closer to the mountains I love. After working in the corporate world of Biotechnology for 12 years I started my own carpentry and woodworking business. In addition to basic handyman tasks I specialize in Custom Furniture, Tile and Hardwood Flooring, Kitchens, Baths and Decks. I was inspired for this career change after a 960 sq ft addition to my home. I hired a framing crew to dry in the space but have completed all of the rest myself. (It was a couple years after this project started that I found my new career) We recently purchased over 40 acres of land in Northern New Mexico and have started a small off grid cabin. Our long term plans are to relocate there and build a larger off grid home. When I'm not up to my elbows in Sawdust I enjoy Photography, Color Digital, Time-Lapse and True Infrared. You can see it at my Flickr pages. http://www.flickr.com/photos/kmswoodworks... Website: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kmswoodworks/se... www.kmswoodworks.com www.http://kmswoodworks.wordpress.com

Remodeling: Cobb county residentual permits and inspections

I purchased a home with an unfinished basement. It has framing/installation/some electrical and roughed in plumbing. So I spoke with an Licensed electrician about wiring it out to code ...»
and him pulling a permit. He advised me if he pulled the permit it would have to be for the full job not just electric so it would be better if I pulled an home owners inspection permit because I'm doing the basement in stages. I called and requested this and I was told it was 71.50 a sq ft and 4.50 per something else. Well I have 1200 Sqt so just adding that together that tells me that can't be right as that is about 85,000 bucks. I question why it would be so much to to finish my basement and was told thats the system and they hung up on me. I called back and got someone else and rephased the question still to get told they needed to know the full amount I was going to spend to finish the basement.

Anyone have any insight on this?

Back in 2001 I did a full 960 sq foot addition to my home....not just re configuring existing ...»
space as you are. My permit costs were in the neighbor hood of $900 for a quoted $85,000 addition. In reality the addition has creeped upwards of 120K (my total costs) the 85K was what I paid out to a framing crew for the dry in. I have done all the interior finishes (hardwood, tile, drywall insulation, elec, plumb etc) myself.

Gardening: How does one make money via gardening?

I have a 10k square foot lot.. I have tilled and (almost) prepared 1/3 of it for a vegetable garden for my family.. But I still have 2/3 of this lot and got the idea to start seeing if I ...»
could make money growing anything in it. I am not having very much luck Googling anything, and so I thought I would ask here if anyone has experience in gardening-for-profit?

Farmers markets and "road side" stands lead the way for this type of endeavor. some places ...»
with also set up "memberships" in community food share programs.

my brother and his wife have a "membership" with a garden in the denver area. as certain crops come into production they get a "percentage" of the harvest.

GID paints can be found in lots of colors and varieties ...»

    http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywor...

you can also get glow in the dark powders and sprinkle them on freshly painted surfaces of mix them with white glue and "paint" them on.

We have used the glow in the dark powders for a lot of out crafting and fairy projects.

  • This is the pond in front of our house. Built by previous owners. Fun, but dirty w/the trees surrounding.
  • Front of house w/large garden in front, and to the side. Entry gate is to the left of the corner of the house. Hoping to build deck along the length of house

Outdoor Living: Our Front Yard Pond and Other Projects

We just purchased this house and it has a great 3/4 acre yard with a pond in front. It has a fountain, w/a spray fountain (see white pvc pipe in pic). We like it OK, but it is dirty as it ...»
is under the trees and gets lots of leaves in it. The fountain leaks in back and the water keeps getting lower and lower, probably a hole in the liner somewhere.

So we are thinking of filling in the pond w/small red lava landscaping rock on bottom (lots of this in a garden we are redoing and I dislike it), then river rocks on top w/the fountain still bubbling up in the middle. Any suggestions on how to do this properly so that the water will not leak out, and we don't have to continue to refill the water level? Thanks for any ideas, I live in Wyoming so there is LOTS of snow in the winter and it is only used in the summer months.

Now we are also going to redo the front of the house w/a full length deck (eventually a roof over it). Have some cinder blocks, and thought about using wood decking over them w/the blocks as support. Do we need to place the blocks in sand to level? Or how should we proceed?

If you want just the fountain part you might be able to install a smaller "bucket" or ready ...»
made rigid Pond liner. This would need to be big enough to catch the fountains "fall". the rest of the pond area could then be filled with the lava rock. You would basically loose the "pond" but keep the fountain.

Painting: Vintage Chaise What Color to Paint

Should I paint this it's original white? I also have a glass top table to match. In great shape and the chaise has good wheels. Would it be best in a nice white enamel or a color? The ironwork on the arms and foot of the chaise are great.

Repurposing & Upcycling: Zippers Galore

I acquired a huge basket of vintage sewing supplies. I love all my new goodies, however I have yet to find a use for approximately 40 different size and color zippers. Do any of you know crafts or uses for these treasures?

As with "caning" wicker can be made a bit more "flexible" with soaking. This may help in ...»
keeping the wayward pieces from cracking when you try to weave them back in place. Keep in mind tho that soaking may also loosen up other areas and compound the problem...it all depends on the level of damage.

Cleaning & Organization: Keeping the toilet plunger/toilet brush sanitized between uses.

I'm looking for a way to store my toilet plunger and toilet brush in a more sanitary manner. I was wondering if anyone has an idea or two for a liquid 'storage' solution (like the stuff ...»
they use in barbershops to keep the combs sanitized). My plunger is 100% hard rubber, so I need something that won't eat away at it. Right now, I just use a small bathroom trash can. It's great for keeping the floor dry, but the ick-factor is up there. I also have cats, so I'd prefer something that is pet-friendly (their litter box is in the bathroom). Thanks!

Cleaning & Organization: Flooring

When we moved into our '78 one floor home, we had the carpeting cleaned well. This had been a rental house and there were many pets in here. Now, the odor is unbearable. The flooring is ...»
not hardwood.

We know this will be quite a project throughout the entire house.

My question is can the flooring be treated to totally eliminate the urine odor?

Thank you!

MARY T When the carpet and pad ...»
are pulled up most likely you will have fine thin layer of silt and sand like residue. I would be surprised if you did not have this. This can easily be vacuumed up leaving the wood sub floor. You can check this flooring with the black light to find trouble areas or just paint the whole she bang with some good primer....a KILZ type or Zinsser BIN primer sealer. I'm a big fan of the Problock prep-rite primer from SW. painting the floor goes fast with a roller. allow to dry properly then have the new pad and carpet installed.
