About Me:

Originally from Michigan, I moved to Colorado in 1991 to be closer to the mountains I love. After working in the corporate world of Biotechnology for 12 years I started my own carpentry and woodworking business. In addition to basic handyman tasks I specialize in Custom Furniture, Tile and Hardwood Flooring, Kitchens, Baths and Decks. I was inspired for this career change after a 960 sq ft addition to my home. I hired a framing crew to dry in the space but have completed all of the rest myself. (It was a couple years after this project started that I found my new career) We recently purchased over 40 acres of land in Northern New Mexico and have started a small off grid cabin. Our long term plans are to relocate there and build a larger off grid home. When I'm not up to my elbows in Sawdust I enjoy Photography, Color Digital, Time-Lapse and True Infrared. You can see it at my Flickr pages. http://www.flickr.com/photos/kmswoodworks... Website: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kmswoodworks/se... www.kmswoodworks.com www.http://kmswoodworks.wordpress.com

EVERYTHING to get sleep and nothing works.

SO, I am yearning to build a soundproof sleep pod over/around my bed. Has anyone done it? Do you have any suggestions for wood, soundproof supplies? Anything?I'm a bit stumped but, it will happen!:)Thanks much.

Have you tried a "white noise" type machine. These come in a number of varieties, electronic ...»
and "wind" or fan type units.

I have a client who lives in an urban "condo" she swears by it. The above link has close to 3000 reviews with the far majority giving it 5 stars.

I think this would be quicker and cheaper way to get around the problem.

Did you ever see that Gary Larson Cartoon...About the "real reason fo the noise upstairs"

It was a pic of two people tossing cinder block bricks at a large target drawn on the middle if the floor.

Cleaning & Organization: Dust in the desert

I need help! I live in the Phoenix area and have not adjusted to the dust from the environment. When I dust furniture using the common aerosol sprays, 5 minutes later the furniture has ...»
more dust on it as if the spray attracts the dust. When the pet cat walks across it the foot prints are maximized and looks worse than when I started. What can I use to eliminate the dust and not have prints and smears?

We live on a dirt road and have two wood stoves in the home. Changing your furnace filters ...»
often will help. You need to look at this as a "global" management plan. In early june we also experience the "yellow wind" this is where thousand of square miles of local pine pollen is released. Being June, we like to open windows as this is the first part of the year where it is warm enough for this.

I have not used an aerosol "furniture dusting" spray in over 20 years. a lightly damped cotton rag is our goto method for furniture. we use a heavy "towel" type rag for doing the hardwood floors and granite tile. sometimes "dry dusting" is done with the cotton rag.

Closing windows on windy days will help keep the dust outside.

Cleaning & Organization: Leftover smell of smoke in car

My sister finally gave up smoking 2 years ago but the smoke smell is still in the car. She was told it would cost $600.00 to remove it as they would have to take the car apart. Is there another way of getting rid of this smell. Thank You

I have seen some folks convert these into cold frames, for starting plants in the garden. If ...»
it is a wood framed door be sure to paint it well with an exterior rated paint...this will reduce the potential for rot due to higher humidity and exposure to water / soil.

What you see (the toad stool) is just a small part of the "plant". The mush room part is the ...»
fruiting body (reproductive part) of the organism. The far greater bulk of the fungi are comprised of Mycelium ...these are fine hair like structures. Fungi feed on dead plant matter, so keeping that "out" of the soil will help. rather than leaving grass clippings and trimmings in the garden remove them and compost them "off site". The higher density or critical mass of a compost bin often allows these to decompose at a higher temp via bacteriological methods..temps where fungi are challenged.

Hand picking early will reduce the spore load for future generations.

  • This is the pond in front of our house. Built by previous owners. Fun, but dirty w/the trees surrounding.
  • Front of house w/large garden in front, and to the side. Entry gate is to the left of the corner of the house. Hoping to build deck along the length of house

Outdoor Living: Our Front Yard Pond and Other Projects

We just purchased this house and it has a great 3/4 acre yard with a pond in front. It has a fountain, w/a spray fountain (see white pvc pipe in pic). We like it OK, but it is dirty as it ...»
is under the trees and gets lots of leaves in it. The fountain leaks in back and the water keeps getting lower and lower, probably a hole in the liner somewhere.

So we are thinking of filling in the pond w/small red lava landscaping rock on bottom (lots of this in a garden we are redoing and I dislike it), then river rocks on top w/the fountain still bubbling up in the middle. Any suggestions on how to do this properly so that the water will not leak out, and we don't have to continue to refill the water level? Thanks for any ideas, I live in Wyoming so there is LOTS of snow in the winter and it is only used in the summer months.

Now we are also going to redo the front of the house w/a full length deck (eventually a roof over it). Have some cinder blocks, and thought about using wood decking over them w/the blocks as support. Do we need to place the blocks in sand to level? Or how should we proceed?

As a fellow Rocky Mountain Resident...I know exactly what you mean. We have 9 months of winter ...»
( I define winter as any month I have had to shovel snow) ...the last patch of snow melted from my yard last Thursday ( 5-14-13).

Many of the smaller alpine lakes around me have the same issue, and it is fun to rib some of the tourists that come up here to vacation and "fish". Most of these folks are clueless that the majority of these small mountain lake do not have any fish in them at all due to freezing...solid. Ice here is often measured in feet and not inches. We had a cold snap two years ago that bottomed out at -40 or so.

I also vote lichen. Lichens are comprised of a symbiotic relationship of algae and fungi. The ...»
fungi help with water retention, and the algae provide the photosynthetic food energy. Here in the rockies we see more of the "orange" kind of lichen on rocks...up in some of the highter elevations 9 to 10 thousand feet. the predominant form of lichen is stringy and can be found on branch tips.

Southern folks think they look a lot like "spanish moss" (Tillandsia usneiodes) which is a flowerling plant ...and not a moss at all.

Kathy...If I remember right the tub refinish was in the neighbor hood of 600-700. In the case ...»
I had done the tub was an older cast iron beast that would have cost about a 1000 to replace. (that is just the tub price. Getting the old one out and a new one in would have been another grand as well...so yes it is cheaper than a swap and the homeowners were super happy with the results. I had this done about 6-7 years ago and have not heard a single bad thing from them.
