Decorating With Rope Ideas

I love working with natural elements when crafting and making things for the home. Rope, Jute, Twine and Sisal Rope are my go to standards. I put together these amazing clips on Hometalk on my board "Designing with Rope Ideas".

  • Welcome to Karen's beautiful 2 story plus basement home! Come on in!
  • Karen is known online as The Graphics Fairy. She specializes in free vintage clipart as well as a DIY blog where she shows what to do with it. She's on Hometalk at: http://www.hometalk.com/thegraphicsfairy
  • Imperfect perfection - a distressed black kitchen table is a true sign of warmth and casual. Coffee anyone? (her coffee was good too!)
  • Layers matter - platters holding dried hydrangeas are the perfect centrepiece, offering colour and a little bit of the outdoors.
  • Store it - vintage baskets and boxes store kitchen essentials. Bringing in wood tones offers warmth like nothing else.
  • Bring the outdoors in - a giant cloche on a wood round holding succulents brightens up this cool coffee table.
  • Group for impact - tarnished gold trophies are the perfect way to bring vintage bling into your vignettes. Grouping like minded components also gives you more bang for your buck.
  • Mix up overscale and small - statement pieces like this clock offer an amazing focal point, perfect for above a fireplace.
  • Fill things up - dried hydrangeas find their way into this sweet trophy used as a vase.
  • Tell a story - this lovely, airy bedroom with sheer curtains overlooks a meadow. The room colour marries the view perfectly! 1
  • Details count - the angel wings add an interesting quirk to this lovely tall armoire. It wouldn't have been the same without them! 1
  • Beautiful storage - Karen collects LOTS of paper, so she's found ways to avoid the big box stationery store and goes vintage instead with drawers, wire baskets, and bookshelves. 1
  • Make it yours - and sometimes we just need a little art around us for no other reason than to adore it.

A full home tour that'll knock your socks off! - The Graphics Fairy

Do you ever wish there was an official guidebook on how to decorate your home? When is there too much stuff? When is there not enough? ...»

Karen, who goes by The Graphics Fairy on her blog, has it DOWN. I recently had the privilege of spending a few days with her during the #htlucketts event and took advantage of the chance to shoot Karen's home.

Guys, this home is so inspiring. I'd call her style upscale vintage minimalist. She has JUST the right amount of everything, it's productive AND beautiful!

There's more to this tour via the blog link, however here's lots to get you started, loaded with some decor advice.

I only have one question... where's her BAD junk?! :)

Reclaimed wood flooring made from pallets and such

So I'm not cool enough to post a cool pallet project like so many other Hometalkers have done. But this is almost as cool - I happened across this amazing flooring made from pallets, shipping crates and other used wood. It looks fantastic and seems to be pretty well-liked:

  • This is what my backyard looked like after a recent rainstorm. 2
  • lasagna gardening- laying down newspaper on the grass 2
  • covered tthe newspaper with cardboard
  • After running out of newpaper and boxes had brilliant idea to use paper lawn refuse bags to complete the rest of the yard. Still ended up with blisters and sore hands from cutting 55 bags! :(
  • Thought that 5 yards of garden soil would be enough to cover the yard- NOPE- only covered half- Had to order 5 more yards. Mulch is on order for after the planting! 1
  • 5 yards of soil only covered half my yard! Had to order 5 more yards!!!
  • Finally done applying all of the soil (10 yards worth)! Placed birdbath in center-this wil be one focal point in my dream garden! Watered the soil.
  • Mulch added today- My blank garden slate is ready and I am ready to begin transforming my yard into my secret garden! Let the garden games begin :) SOOO excited!
  • I've been buying perennials and herbs to plant.
  • In the meantime, while waiting for "planting time", I bought and installed a cool OUTDOOR sink!!!
  • Some of the seeds we've planted have started to come up ! So excited!!! 1
  • My future grandson-in-law carved a cute little stool out of a tree stump! Here it is by some tulips that have brightened up the yard, motivating me with sign of great things to come! 1

Transforming my Backyard into a Secret Garden- Part 1

Love my backyard, but after a rainstorm it turns into a lake! I've decided to completely get rid of the grass and transform it into a beautiful, peaceful flower garden retreat. I will not ...»
only be adding soil to the low spots which will help redirect the water, but I will create a beautiful space where I would much rather spend my time with the flowers and plants than cutting the grass :) Huge undertaking, but I am psyched up for it!

So far, I have used some "lasagna gardening" techniques- covered all of the grass (and weeds!) with newspaper, cardboard or paper yard refuse bags. Second step, top that with garden soil mix. I am waiting until I'm sure there are no more frost advisories before I start to plant my flowers and vines. I've started collecting the seedlings I'm going to plant as well as growing some from seeds. (I've got an ENTIRE back yard to fill with flowers!!!) I've been planning my secret garden layout and I can't wait until I can actually start planting my flowers! Wish me luck!

  • Vintage Cane Chair makeover~Before She was a beauty but the cane was torn.
  • Before She was a beauty but the cane was torn.
  • Before Take pictures or mental notes of how and where everything was..incase you got lost along the way. I ripped out all the cane and backing.
  • Before Take pictures or mental notes of how and where everything was..incase you got lost along the way. I ripped out all the cane and backing.
  • I ripped it all out and started with a blank canvas. Painted, Vaxed (yes vaxed), and distressed first.
  • I Pulled the gray fabric very tight to make a strong back for the chair. I used a lot of staples because this part won't show.
  • The outside of the chair...you can use any fabric there I was afraid I would run out of the greek key so I opted to use a contrasting gray Duck cloth. strong and easy to work with.
  • Then the fabric (blue key) that will show is a little trickier. Folded for a smooth edge and hot glued along the existing edge. Yes lots of burns..I have no fingerprints :)
  • Seat is easy cover pull taut and staple..tuck tuck pull and repeat.
  • Cotton trim/rope hot glued for clean edge..could have been used on all edges to hide glue, staples etc..if I hadn't of ran out :)
  • Hot Glue, Furniture tacks, staples, and lots of tucking. ;)
