Favorite area of home improvement:

My favorite would be DIY (borrowing idea from others is always great) or just being creative.

Lord of the Rings Bunk Beds

I'm not really advertising rustic furniture but I couldn't resist sharing this picture. It's like taken out of a story. I absolutely love it. I can picture myself reading some bedtime stories to my future young ones on a bed like this. I think this design it's good for a cabin though. However, if you like all the fun and want something different, go for it. I think it's fine as long as your kids enjoy it. Remember you'll have to replace their beds when they grow up so build something ...»
fun now. There should be more designers creating fun beds .Who knows, perhaps they sell.

  • Year 4: The garden gradually took over the entire long, narrow front yard.
  • Year 4: I cannot resist flowering perennials. Hidden amongst them are all sorts of vegetables, berries, and a few dwarf fruit trees.
  • year 3: I put a little pond in a raised bed right by the front door. The soil there was very poor so this was a good alternative.
  • Year 4: I put my raised beds in the front yard where the sun shines.
  • Year 3: Impatient for the blue delphiniums to bloom, I made my own with bottles. 1
  • Year 4: I leave the pansies in the fall to go to seed and they come back on their own in the spring.
  • Year 1: I don't have many photos of the side garden at the beginning because I never thought it would amount to anything.
  • Year 2: Here's the same side garden area two years later. I fell inn love with daisies which loved the clay soil.
  • Year 2: This is the arbour before I planted the butternut vine.
  • Year 4: This is the butternut vine area just two years later. The delphiniums got so tall they spilled over in the rain.
  • Year 2: I started putting my broken tools and mirrors on the fence to create a fun focal point above the orange lilies.
  • Year 4: The old tools were replaced by some garden art and a pink weigela adds colour when the orange lilies are not in bloom.

Little City Garden - Before and Afters

This was my first garden. I took very few "before" pictures beause I didn't know what I was doing for the first few years and I never thought it would amount to anything. ...»

To get started, I just started planting plants I liked and paid attention to what did and did not work. Gradually, with a lot of patience and some heartbreak/big mistakes, it became something I found quite beautiful.

What was once a bare lot in a new city subdivision transformed into a magnet for all sorts of birds and other wildlife. In the end, when I had used up all of the other planting space, I removed the entire front yard (the only full sun area) and filled it in with flowering perennials, vegetables, berries, and dwarf fruit trees.

I think the best way to become a gardener is to just do it and let the garden tell you what will work. I hope you enoy my little city garden.

My Vegetable Garden

Each year I enjoy working in my vegetable garden. It is just large enough to give me the variety that we like. I've tried to design it in a manner that enables me to not only rework it ...»
each year, but to maintain it throughout the growing season. The photos are from two different years. I prepare the ground by cultivating it with a tiller. I then add miracle grow dirt and mix it in, and I use Miracle Grow Liquid Fertilizer. I do this each year. The landscape logs are two high so I can keep adding dirt. I'm also working with Georgia clay. The mulch allows me easy access to the plants and helps keep the weeds under control. I have the water connected to my sprinkler system. I also use a portable sprinkler at times.

IKEA Hacked Barnboard Coffee Table Tutorial

Taking risks isn't always an easy thing because sometimes,

it doesn't work out how you had planned. BUT then there are other times it comes out so ...»

much better and it is those times that make the creative journey so much more FUN!

This project was such a sore spot for me last week.I bought this coffee table form IKEA a few months ago because I just adored the size and shape. I knew I would alter it in some way but.....we had the hurricane,

then Thanksgiving, then Christmas.I kept sitting in the room, trying to decide WHAT to do.

Then I thought, "this shouldn't be this hard." So one day last week, I decided to just paint it in ASCP in French Linen. Then, BM Kendall Charcoal. Then, BM Revere Pewter. Then, ASCP in French Linen again. Do you ever have those days where you just can't seem to get it right?

So I guess it seemed to my 7 year old that I was just a little frustrated:). He said, "mom, you know it took Thomas Edison over 2,000 trys before he got the light bulb right." Phew, I needed that reality check:).

I decided to let it go for a few days. Until...... the "light bulb" went off,

a barnboard table top!

I have picked up a few of them already cured around Halloween, yes if you want to try ...»
something different, you can use stamps on them, from there you can use a wood burning tool on them. Check out gourd art, I am sure there are lots of ideas out there. There very versatile to use from stamping, burning, adding resist to areas and staining the areas not resisted, others have even pierced the rim and weaving a new rim.
