About Me:

Learning about tiny vegetable gardens is this year's goal. Because of a love of trees (here in Chicagoland), the sunny garden will be ample yet tiny. I buy tomato plants with blooms. I will plant some herbs and many geranium plants. Any news about plants that are delivered to Chicago area grocery stores?

Favorite area of home improvement:

News about geranium plants and keeping trees protected is of interest.

Keep a Toilet Clean (much longer)

Have a toilet that seems to get dirty very fast despite thorough cleaning? Try cleaning the siphon jets. ...»

1.) Clean the underside of the rim with a nylon brush and homemade cleaning solution of vinegar, baking soda, and water.

2.) Shut off the water supply and flush the toilet to empty the tank.

3.) Block off the siphon jets with duct tape.

4.) Pour 1 gallon of vinegar in the tank and flush the toilet. Let it sit over night.

5.) In the morning remove the tape and open the water supply. Flush water through once to clear out any remaining vinegar.

Staining your concrete patio to look like tile.

I was so pleased with the DIY project on our back patio! I stained the concrete to look like tile. We used painter's tape to create the look of grout lines, and we used a concrete stain from Lowe's to stain the concrete. For a step by step tutorial, just click on the link below.

Termites are Swarming!

My neighbor brought over some winged insects emerging from the ground in his mulch bed. Termites! The winged adults are swarming now, as are adult fire ants. ...»

How can you tell the difference? Termite bodies are pretty thick from head to tail (like a cigar). Ant bodies have three definite sections, connected by a narrow neck and waist.

Make sure your termite treatment is effective!

  • We love this Walkway 1

Recycled parking lot into walkway

Mu husband and I located a business where parking lot was being chewed into oblivion and brought the pieces home and made a walkway. We even placed stone statue with under-lighting in the middle to memorialize our son. This is mostly in the shade bur sure would like to have blooming plants in the center. Along the walk we planted dwarf gardenias.

Gardening: Anyone know the name of this flower?

Yesterday after the landscapers finished clearing the back of our lot, this flower was left standing all by itself. Does anyone know what it is? It is along at the top of the over 2 foot stem, but I believe I can see another unopened bud about 1/2 way down.

The stem & leaves look like carnation. However, the flower looks like a cousin of the daisy.

The warm winter in my part of the country has gardeners asking if it's time to prune roses.

I normally advise waiting until early March. This avoids the problem of pruning now, having more warm weather (which stimulates new growth) and then a hard freeze in late Feb. which would ...»
damage the new sprouts. If your rose has new growth now, leave it alone and let's see how Nature proceeds.

Spring Topdressing

Most gardeners know the value of adding organic matter/manure or compost to native soil before planting a shrub or flowers. But the soft soil that was once there will get hard after a few ...»
years if nothing more is done. One way to keep soil soft around perennials is to topdress them each spring.

Mix a bag of soil conditioner with a bag of mushroom compost in a wheelbarrow. Pull the mulch back from around your plants and put a half-inch layer of topdressing material on the soil. Recover with mulch.

As the weather warms, earthworms will eagerly feed on the rich material and bring it down into the soil around your plants, feeding the plants and keeping the soil soft!
