About Me:

I'm a writer who enjoys working on my long-neglected 1940 Cape Cod using materials I find at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore.

Favorite area of home improvement:

I like coming up with new ways to do things. For instance, I absolutely cannot figure out mitred corners and didn't want to do the pre-made cheats (mostly because they're expensive) so I figured out a way to make moulding that didn't need mitres and has this cool Art Deco look.

  • Dog gate built using shutters 4

My first share -- I wanted something a little nicer and more permanent than a baby gate to try and keep our three dogs

out of the living room. (One of the dogs is old and has ... problems of the floor-ruining sort.) I'd bought these old shutters at a yard sale a few months back and by attaching two and a half of them together and securing them at the top and bottom with trim, they made a perfect gate. Took less than an hour start to finish.

It was super easy to do. The boards at the top and bottom are just furring strips. I ...»
predrilled through the furring strips into the shutter and simply made a solid frame out of it. You can't see it but on the bottom board I put a rolling caster to support the weight of the door because it's pretty wide and heavy and I knew it would eventually sag. It's attached on one side with regular gate hinges and there's an eye-hook latch on the other end to hold it shut. I can't say what a difference it's made in our house. We can order pizza without the delivery guy getting assaulted by our dogs. People can come in our house without worrying that that the dogs are going to slip past them and out into the street. This year, my Christmas tree didn't get that extra little watering the Chewie liked to provide. It's been nice.

Found during demo

Over the years, we have made some interesting discoveries during project demo. Frequently, we unearth old newspapers like this one yesterday from 1940. "4 grapefruit for $.17... lamb chops $.25/ lb" tells a story of the good old days! Have you ever made any great discoveries during a project?

In front of our house is a crazy mess of ivy so thick that going through it was like an ...»
archeological dig. As I was removing the layers of ivy, I started finding random newspapers, nicely sealed in plastic bags, from nearly 2 decades back. The toys I found were adorable--from baseballs to tonka trucks to the simplest toy cars for toddlers. It was like traveling back through a little boy's childhood. The funniest thing I found was that at the bottom of it all was a WALL. A big honking stone wall. None of the neighbors had any idea there was a wall there. The ivy had consumed it.

Furniture: Nice legs anyone?

I'm attempting to build a console table using two bifold closet doors I've painted grey. I'm trying to find some unique items to use as legs for the table, maybe something similar to ...»
what's shown in the attached pictures. Any suggestions on where I can find unique table legs? I'm talking reclaimed, repurposed, not expensive, brand new table legs.

It depends on how fancy you want your table to be. I've seen table legs made from old ...»
crutches, baseball bats, golf clubs. I've seen iron that used to be used on a porch that would make for interesting table legs, and metal piping could be dolled up with some odd fittings to give it an industrial look.

I finished painting my kitchen countertops this weekend.

Total project was about $60.00. ($17.00 for the Primer, $20.00 for the Countertop Coating and $20.00 for the Polycrylic). I already owned the paint, but that was about $15.00 worth. I know they sell kits for this kindof thing (made by Gianni or Rustoleum), but I wanted to go with a different paint scheme. I got the original idea from a blog (creative Kristi's) Total process took about 3 days
