  • how do i get the bushes to fill in around the bottom?

Gardening: Pruning Hydrangeas and Encouraging growth around the bottom of my Shrubbery.

1. My Hydrangea is getting it's leaves for the spring. I noticed there are a lot of twigs / branches that don't have leaves yet. Am I supposed to trim back some of these at some point? If ...»
so when and how do I know which ones?

2. May shrubbery looks a little sparse around the bottom - how do i encourage it to fill in?

3. Once everything has finished blooming i'm going to trim it back. I know right now they're much too high and blocking the front of the house / part of the windows. Would you advise trimming back more than 1/3? Would it damage the shrubs?

many thanks!

martine

Painting: Prepping and Painting Exterior Windows - Is my painter doing a good job?

Hi there. Our exterior windows were badly in need of scraping down, re-glazing and painting. They are original 1940's wood, double hung windows with colonial grids - the sun had badly ...»
blistered the glaze and paint so it was crumbling off. We've hired someone to scrape, sand glaze, caulk, prime and paint. I'm not convinced he's doing a good job so far(...and I know you get what you pay for) so I want to direct him in the right way. He scraped most, but not all of the old dried glaze off. As a result the new glaze is looking a little bumpy and uneven. I know this is part of the charm of old windows - but I'm not sure how much of this is because they're old and how much is down to a poor job. He had scraped and glazed about half of the windows today and isn't coming back until monday to finish the rest / start painting - How can I manage this to stop it becoming a botched job? Is it best he tries to fix before its had a weeks drying time? thanks!

use sites like Home Talk, Houzz and Pinterest (and google image search!) to do your research ...»
first and find some inspiration. You need to work out what you like / what you want / what you need. Nothing worse that seeing something half way through a project and wishing you'd done that!

Master Bathroom Makeover on a Budget!

I would have loved to rip out the entire thing and start over but WHAT TO DO ON A BUDGET??

So here was my solution for a more updated beautiful bathroom that would not break the ...»

bank.

I left the shower surround and tub surround the same, but everything else I took out and started from scratch. New shower door, new toilet, new cabinet in the toilet room, new fixtures, new lighting, new cabinets which I measured and then ordered from Lowe's, new sinks and then I had a granite company cut a remnant granite for my master bath which made it less expensive. The tall cabinet we did not attach to the wall nor made it permanent in case we got tired of it or ever sold the house and the new owners did not like the look. I wanted more storage so therefore that tall cabinet even though it might not be the most pleasing aesthetic design. Except for the granite, I installed everything myself, with a little manly brawn to carry the large items and help me move them around and position them, other than that it was all me.

  • In front of my mailbox. I planted this bed last year. Creeping phlox is blooming and starting to spread. Dusty Miller never died over the winter. My Osteospurmum is gone (but hoping it might come back). There was Mandevilla weaving around the mailbox. It probably won't come back but keeping hope alive! Also, I have meadow sage and peruvian daylillies cropping up in the back. Oh, there are some dianthus buried in there somewhere too. (I know, I went a little crazy.) 2

  • My first year in the house, I didn't know what an azalea was and when they all bloomed at the same time, it was pretty spectacular!
  • Another azalea about to explode
  • Azaleas galore!
  • More azaleas behind the oak trees and camelia
  • Camelia in my front yard. Buds look a little ill but at least it doesn't have the little white bugs like my ones in the backyard
  • azalea. Blooms look a little weak compared to the others
  • My only dogwood.
  • Forsythia and azaleas with another camelia to the right
  • fire power nandina, iris, azalea (of course), rhododendron and some leftover crocus and daffodil greens. Gerbera daisy and red hot pocker are starting to sprout too. I'll have a few gladiolus pop up before summer is over too. 2
