Staining your concrete patio to look like tile.

I was so pleased with the DIY project on our back patio! I stained the concrete to look like tile. We used painter's tape to create the look of grout lines, and we used a concrete stain from Lowe's to stain the concrete. For a step by step tutorial, just click on the link below.

Countertops: Popular countertop materials for 2012: Zinc and Walnut

For those who asked what materials were trending. For 2012, designers and architects have been buzzing about these materials. Honorable mentions are also bronze and our engineered-concrete tops (Verdicrete)...Enjoy:

I like them both. It would depend on what I was putting in the rest of the kitchen, which one ...»
    I would go with.

Design & Décor: Are you a less is more type or a more is great type?

These are two projects I did in my interior design business. One was a client who wanted his home to look like he was a world traveler and collector. (I sourced all the stuff he brought ...»
only his clothes) the other is a world traveller who wanted a warm clean place to relax.

  • I had just repainted my bathroom and a friend suggested I look at this site to revamp my large bathroom mirror. This is my before picture.
  • This is my completed picture, without stain. $163.00 in all and so far about 6 hours with myself and my brother, both novices in carpentry. 3
  • Left Vanity.
  • Right Vanity.
  • This was befor crown moulding and base moulding. I had yet to adhere the framing around the mirror. 2
  • First coat of stain. 1
  • Stained to match the below cabinets. Still have to steel wool, apply another coat of stain, steel wool again, and then one coat of satin finish polyurethane. 3

I used this idea and revamped my large bathroom mirror this weekend. Here are my photos.

  • Maple mixed with American cherry, hardwood flooring. 2

Mixing different wood species to create a unique hardwood floor can be quite beautiful.

We always put 3 coats of polyurethane to eliminate wood grain that may show through finish. We like to make our floors functional, as well as a work of art.

  • After we rebuilt the roof and installed four skylights we rebuilt the steps to the adjoining rooms and redid the floor coverings in a more appropriate manganese floor tile..
  • Prior to our renovation the existing windows were in danger of deterioration from exposure to the elements. Noe the area is an inviting family area as well as a comfortable entertaining spot.
  • These steps were awkward and dangerous before we redesigned them in this flowing design.
  • We modeled the beams on the ceiling after the original hand hewed beams in the adjoining room. 3

Yesterday I posted the historic kitchen that won the local NARI 2012 CotY contractor of the year award.

These are a few of the photos that won us the local 2011 Contractor of the Year award for a remodel in the front entry of the same house.. ...»

This remodel is in the same house as our 2012 CotY winner. In this remodel we removed most of the existing sub-standard roof, then we rebuilt everything under our new roof.

  • White is a non color and has contradictory interpretations. In Western cultures it symbolizes innocence and purity, cleanliness. White means safety, purity, and cleanliness. White is associated with light, goodness, innocence, purity, and virginity. 15
  • Green is the color of nature symbolizing growth, harmony, freshness, and fertility. Green has strong emotional correspondence with safety and is believed to have great healing power. It is the most restful color for the human eye--can improve vision. 14
  • Red is a very emotionally intense color. It enhances human metabolism, increases respiration rate, and raises blood pressure. Red is the color of fire and blood, and is associated with energy, war, danger, as well as passion, desire, and love. 6
  • Blue represents peace, tranquility, and calm. Just the opposite, it also represents reverie, sadness, and melancholy. Blue also represents the sky, heavens, and the sea which is non ending, therefore it is often associated with depth and stability. 6
