About Me:

I make jewelry and other items out of glass tile and am currently designing my own backsplash in my kitchen. We are redoing it ourselves and it is a big challenge. I hope it comes out ok!!!

Favorite area of home improvement:

Accessorizing reveals so much about your personality. It is a personal statement and makes the difference between a home that is just 'nice' and a home that is stunning. Details make a big difference and my accessories are all about the right color with lots of texture. I use natural elements in my home including geodes, shells and glass. I also love gardening and I use the garden as my color palette.

Design & Décor: Is this picture too big for the space? Seeking a little design advice.

I have been watching this picture since last year and it finally went on sale. I rushed to purchase it - so thrilled that I was finally getting it! I put it up on my mantle, where I ...»
plan to hang it ... stepped back and thought, "geez ... that's much bigger than it looked in the store". It's HUGE!

Now I'm torn. :-( I love the picture but I think maybe it is too large for this space. I have 9 ft. ceilings. What do you guys think? Too big? Can I do something to make it work? (not raise the ceiling of course) Flank it with sconces or something?

You have a beautiful fireplace which is the focal point of your room which should stay that ...»
way. Altho the picture is a nice one, it is very large and too big above the fireplace and the two are fighting each other for your eye When you look at them together, you don't know which to look at first and each takes away from the other... I wouldn't put anything above the fireplace except for a mirror perhaps an antique one with smoky glass or any kind in a frame to scale with your fireplace which would be maybe 1/2 of the size of the painting. What about putting the picture on a different wall where it can be enjoyed without any competition from the fireplace? The mirror will also make your room look larger. I bet you can find a great place for that picture.

Painting: I have a home with newer vinyl windows, and am wondering about painting them.

Is this possible? Are there any special steps or paint I need to do/use?

You don't need any special 'vinyl' paint. Just get a good primer and paint.

Classic Kitchen Remodel

This AK kitchen renovation is what we might call a "classic" kitchen remodel. The selections are rich, neutral, luxurious and great compliments to almost any style of accessories or ...»
fabrics a homeowner would want to bring in.

The island boasts wine storage along with decorative corbels that really set it apart from the crowd! The wall cabinets extend to the ceiling as does stone backsplash around the vent hood. The kitchen is not enormous but, with the remodel, gained so much customized cabinet storage and countertop prep space that it is perfect for even aspiring chefs.

Note the built-in niche built behind the cooktop. What do you think of this addition?

I love how uncluttered it looks putting a microwave inside the island. We decided to do away ...»
with a microwave for health reasons but we did try a space saving idea with the space we can work with. We are having a cabinet built, table height against the wall where our previous table was. We will put enough of an overhang on top so that we can sit comfortably and feel that we are at a breakfast table and storing all of our cookware at the same time.

  • Odd, it stands only 48" high. The wiring is old. I think this is from the late 40's early 50's
  • The base is marble. There are no markings on the bottom.
  • This is one of the arms. There are glass teardrops I took off to clean.

Cleaning & Organization: How do I clean a very old, solid brass lamp that is absolutely filthy?

intricate. Also, does anyone have an idea of value? Of course this is one of my CL finds.

wet. You can take a toothbrush and mild dishwasher detergent in warm water and clean the brass that way. Wipe off soapy water and dirt with a wet cotton cloth. Then once it is clean you can use a brass polish to remove tarnish. There are also sprays designed for crystal chandeliers that might clean the dirt off the brass. The dirt drips off so you would have to put the chandelier on a plastic cloth in another room. Cover the electrical parts with plastic wrap first.
