Outdoor Living: OK, Hometalkers, I am having a pergola installed tomorrow (photos to be posted upon completion).

The rafters are going to be cedar and left natural, but, because I am in Florida, the contractor has talked me into using pressure-treated for the uprights, which will be sunk in the ...»
ground and cemented in place. These I am going to paint to match other trim on the house. So my question is: What is the best base coat/prep to make sure the knots etc. in the pressure-treated don't show through. I'll be using a SW semi-gloss for the top coat(s) because I still have that from when the house was painted.

An oil base product won't penetrate a pressure treated wood. Use an exterior solid stain base ...»
coat then you can top coat with the any latex paint, including the SW Semi gloss ( latex). I would recommend a flat or satin, but not semi gloss. It shows every imperfection. Press. treated should sit exposed for 3-4 weeks, then put a deck/porch cleaner to get the oils off the surface. The top coat is only as good as the primer, so use something good.

The fire bowl, which is the copper portion, is about $300. The entire fire pit, including gas ...»
connections, burner, masonry surround, stone facing and decorative stone/glass would run woud be $3,500.-$4,000.

I know a good contractor in Jax. that could do this for you if your interested.

    Good Luck!

Gardening: honestly one of the first quotes i've gotten was outragous!

Im in shock right now. $1150.00. it's insane. and the name of the place "discount" is in the title! I can't believe these people! I'm very upset! I feel like cause im a woman they feel they can make these outragous estimates!

If you chose to be qoted by a contractor because the had "discount" in their name then "That ...»
is the problem". You should be pricing professionals for whatever work you are getting quoted. Contact the local affiliate of the National Association of Home Builders to find professional remodeler's in your market.
