About Me:

My name is Laura and I love being creative. From everything to photography, scrapbooking, painting, jewelry design, and more recently, mosaics and re-purpose/rehab household items/furniture found in thrift shops or on the side of the road. Motivated by relocating to Texas and leaving some furniture behind and saving to purchase a new home, I am on budget lock-down. I found that re-purposing and fixing up those items quite enjoyable and the creative outlet helps me over the lack of power shopping! I love sharing and gathering information to help others as well as learn from others' techniques and experience.

Favorite area of home improvement:

At the moment, it is re-purposing found items or thrifty furniture. I love to incorporate mosaics, painting onto these items to make them unique as well as go along with my decor.

Wildlife & Animals: Plastic Kiddie Pool as a grassy area for guinea pigs, is it possible?

I know this might be an interesting, yet strange issue but...I have several guinea pigs but I live in an apartment, so I don't really have my own yard, but do have patio space. I was ...»
thinking of creating a small "yard" out of a plastic kiddie pool, lined with sod for the piggies to roam and snack in. However, my concerns are will the sod survive? Will mold grow because of the plastic bottom? Should I create small holes in the bottom of the pool to allow for ventilation? Can I cover it in some way to keep out the roaming cats from using it as a toilet? I have considered the option of creating one indoors as I have the space. They have a 3 level cage with another level at the bottom for storage that would make an excellent little playground for them. But again, not really sure if that is possible without creating a moldy mess. Any tips would be appreciated. Especially because I have a "black" thumb...lol

@Sia, aww that's so cute. I have a 6 year old and I am entertained by them, more than she is. ...»

@Donna They can eat regular sod, but I like the wheat and rye grass idea. i was just thinking that I wanted to put it together quickly, hence the sod idea. I don't plan on them being in there for long periods of time, only for a change of pace exercise space outside, so I don't think urine would be a problem. Plus, being vegetarians, it will probably help the soil! I'll definitely upload some pics after I work out all the details this weekend.

  • Stage your items for sale as you would stage them in your hom.
  • Gather similar items together for a collected look.
  • Have a sense of humor when staging items. Untangle jewelry and hang it.
  • Hang fabric items on the line so customers can see what they're buying.
  • Use buckets to corale awkward objects.
  • Make "grab bags" out of smaller items, like trinkets or kids toys. Keep it a mystery for a fun twist.
  • If you're selling clothing or any kind of fabric item, hang it when possible
  • Stage yours items for sale as you would stage your home. Gather like objects whenever possible to create a curated collection.
  • post magazine clippings to give your customers ideas on what to do with their purchases once they get them home.

  • Red wriggler worms used for indoor vermicomposting. Did you know they can live up to 15 years?
  • Step # 1 ~ drill small holes on the bottom and sides and large holes on the top of a plastic storage tub
  • Here's a shot of the holes in the worm bin so you can see what I mean!
  • Step # 2 ~ crumple newspaper, then wet it, wring it out and fill the bottom of the tub this way
  • Step # 3 ~ add a few handfuls of peat moss or garden soil and toss gently, the add the worms and lightly toss again
  • Step # 4 ~ now add a few kitchen scraps. Keep the moisture at this level by adding a little water or wet plant matter if dry, shredded paper if too wet

DIY Project ~ Vermicomposting in a tub in a few easy steps!

Plant matter is a resource we should be keeping out of the landfills. But what do you do if you don't have the space for a compost pile or you don't want to be constantly running outside ...»
with your kitchen scraps? Vermicomposting is the answer and , even better,a worm bin is efficient when you're continually adding new material, unlike your outdoor compost pile. Composting at home in a worm tub is most suitable for smaller families and apartment dwellers, or can be used in combination with an outside composting method. A well-tended worm bin shouldn't smell, so some people will keep them in a kitchen cupboard if they're short on space or just want it handy for adding their kitchen waste. The garage or basement are also possible locations for your worm bin. (Note: do not add animal waste, bones, fats or meat to your bins or compost piles. That will make it smell and draw unwanted visitors!)

Follow the easy steps below to set up your own worm bin and begin vermicomposting at home. Set the finished lidded bin on a couple bricks on a tray to collect any drips. You will keep plant matter out of the landfill and have the benefits of compost and compost tea for your houseplants, worms for feeding birds and pet reptiles and going fishing, too!

See my blog post at http://ourfairfieldhomeandgarden.com/diy-pro... for more composting information and worm sources.

label completely off with no traces of the sticky gunk left behind. In the past I've used a product called Goo Gone for this job and it's always worked well. But guess what? You can make your own Goo Gone by simply combining vegetable oil and baking soda. I tested it out on a couple little glass jars and it really does work! clear plastic container that I just can't seem to remove the gooey residue from. I have tried soaking it, vinager, alcohol, nail polish remover and scrubbing it, nothing seems to work. Repurposed Frappuccino Bottles

I dearly love Starbucks bottled Frappuccinos!

I found a way to justify my consumption!

wash. They look very much like vintage milk bottles....love this look.

We use them as drinking bottles...they look great with paper straws in them, vases...have fun tying burlap or twine around the neck to dress them up a bit...... we also use them for our collection of sand from the different beaches that we have visited.

You can leave the lids as they are...or spray paint them any color you wish. For my son's sand collection we spray the lids silver...for the collection above we just left the lids as they are because we store them on a high shelf. We then tie a tag with the beach's name on it around the neck.

It's neat to collect sand from different beaches and see the vast differences in each one. Some are dark, some are light, some are fine, some are course....if you have never been to the website that shows the magnification of sand.....by all means, please visit it here. It is amazing and so beautiful! We are walking on these lovely treasures!

So, find some Frappuccino on sale.....have a Frappuccino Party {or drink them all yourself, like me}......and have some fun with the neat empty bottles! #BeforeandAfter
