Basement & Garage: I have a crawlspace under part of the house and got a recommendation to replace my regular screens on the ventilation

openings with screens that automatically shut off airflow in the winter cold. Will this keep my crawlspace warmer in the winter and so reduce the chance of pipes freezing? Do they work? ...»

One more thought. THe vents were put there for many reasons. Humidity control has been a real ...»
problem but when the vents are shut for extended periods of time you can create a real air quality issue for the home. Even if there is no visible mold on your wood the ground is full of fungus and mold, decomposing materials and different gases that are unhealthful. Shutting off fresh air ventilation to aid with freezing pipes can create other issues with air quality in the home.

They are migrating through to their winter homes in South America. It's a reminder to us all to feed them as they pass through. The best food for most songbirds is black oil sunflower ...»

Home Maintenance & Repairs: How do I exhaust an upper level bathroom fan to the outdoors?

My roof does not have any gable ends. Do I take the exhaust pipe to the soffit and exhaust down, or do I go up through the roof? If through the roof, how do I stop water from coming in?
