About Me:

Professional Interior decorator. See my blog too at www.cndesigns.wordpress.com

Favorite area of home improvement:

I enjoy Interior design for all budgets. Because the economy has been a bit sluggish, I've done a lot of redesign. That's a viable option for many home owners because using a lot of existing furnishings (especially larger, expensive pieces) is money-saving. My motto is "LOVE THE HOME YOU'RE IN ... AGAIN!"

  • Guest room without sheers. Also, although you can't see it, it only had a small flush-mount contemporary styled light fixture.
  • Here's the same room with addition of sheers and a gorgeous $20 second-hand chandelier! Oh what a difference a little more light can do :-)
  • Beautiful aged brass with glass baubles and bobeches...not acrylic or plastic. The gleam is amazing!

Oh What Light Can Do!

A little touch of glass! This is a $20 second-hand chandelier I bought for our upstairs guest room. It sure does lend more panache to this room! Before the light fixture, a rather ...»
contemporary flush-mount one, (unseen in the first photo) didn't do a thing for the room. Now the elegance is complete.

Bathroom Mirror Fakes a Window

Loved the Ballard Designs Garden District Mirror. Wanted a window in our bathroom. Found a gently used mirror that looked similar to the Ballard mirror and used it as a faux window! I may ...»
use paint at a later date to highlight the mirror's etching. Ballard's mirror: $230. Mine: $20 plus a little white paint :-)

Bedroom: Linen sheets? Yay or nay?

I'm considering investing (yes investing!) in a set of linen sheets. These are not inexpensive (at least in my book) because so far my biggest splurge was 100% organic cotton. So, the question is, has anyone out there purchased linen sheets and do you think it's a good choice? I love the look of them but have never had them. Thanks!

  • This isn't the actual piano however the surface looks quite similar to this...lots of damage to the finish.

Furniture Revivals: Removing finish from a piano

We have an older model grand piano in our workshop. The finish is totally shot from sun damage and neglect from the former owners, and it has several large gouges as well. The question is, has anyone used some of the gel strippers to remove several layers of stain, varnish and/or lacquer from other old pieces of furniture? What were your results? BTW, my husband is a Registered Piano Technician so all the 'insides' of the piano will be safely/professionally removed leaving only the ...»
cabinet which is essentially like any other piece of furniture. We don't usually do piano cabinet refinishing but since this is one we bought for rebuilding/resale, we can do a little experimenting if needed.

A old bookcase is updated to look like a fireplace!

I took an old nasty bookcase, a old mirror, and a footboard and pieced them together to create a fabulous faux fireplace!! ...»

Piecing items together (even chipboard for the detail!) and painting them the same color makes them look united.

Tin panels attached to a simple frame give the illusion of a chimney.

I'm loving my new "fireplace" and the charm it brings my space!

Countertops: White kitchen with light gray or medium sand-colored countertops?

recycled glass), or a medium sand-colored, speckled countertop (speckles more round). They are both solid surface. Which countertop would you get, light gray of medium sand?

P.S. About the backsplash.....Depending on how much other 'pattern' you are planning in your ...»
kitchen you may want to use the same counter material for your backsplash. Pattern comes in forms some people don't recognize. There is pattern in the grain of wood and/or laminate flooring; pattern in the countertop material (eg. large splotches of color in granite for example); pattern in any fabrics you may bring in or other accessories. Again, make sure the undertones work well together with your countertops, cabinets and flooring, if you choose a different material for your backsplash. I saw a kitchen redo that had spared no expense. High end everything. The problem was they picked countertop, backsplash, cabinet colors, etc. from different stores and it was all toooooo busy together! I'm quite certain they loved each element in and of itself, however when all those were put together, it appeared as if there was no plan to the look. It looked like a showroom where a company was trying to display every high end thing they sold. NOT what one should do in a home situation. Dagmar, get pics of your dream look and don't be afraid to copy it :-) After all "imitation is a sincere form of flattery" :-) My guess is since you're choosing white cabinets, a wonderful timeless look, you've got fabulous ideas for your finished kitchen. Cannot wait to see it here on hometalk :-)
