  • This project cost a total of $20 because I used mostly materials and plants I already had. See it on "Our Fairfield Garden" board on Pinterest @ Barb Rosen and my website http://ourfairfieldhomeandgarden.com 8

Making a succulent garden in an old birdbath

Upcycled an old, leaky birdbath into a beautiful succulent garden! I mixed about 2 parts compost to 1 part builder's sand and mounded it up in the birdbath basin using small rocks, then added the succulents.http://ourfairfieldhomeandgarden.com

DIY Cowboy Cooler

I was in love with the look of a rustic cooler for our patio, but was turned off by the high prices. So my husband and I took an old cooler apart and built our own! The base is held by a ...»
2x2 frame, covered in reclaimed fence posts found by the curb. We attached a spigot to the drain hole in the cooler for drainage, used an antler shed for the handle, and added a bottle opener for decoration. It was so easy, and only $30 in supplies (since we had the cooler and fence wood on hand). You can check out the full step-by-step tutorial on my blog ( http://www.killerbdesigns.com/rustic-cooler-... ) to see how to make your own! It's a great addition to our back porch, and was so easy to make.

  • The rack hinges to fold out in the center but lay flat when not in use. 2
  • I can get lots of cloth diapers and delicate items on each of the two racks I built.
  • The baby gate came pre-notched which made setting up the hinge feature very simple, but with a bit more work I think non-notched panels can be made to work very well too!

DIY Wall-Mounted Clothes Drying Rack

delicates and other items I prefer to air dry, and folds flat against the wall when not in use to save space. After building this rack, I am certain that with a little creativity, many crib panels, baby safety gates and other slatted panels can be repurposed into clothes drying racks. The best part? The total cost for this project was less than $5 for a few screws and washers. See the full details of this project on my blog at http://www.nwedible.com/2012/04/wall-moutned...

  • First, prepare "butterfly food" by mixing nine parts water with one part sugar. Depending on the size of your jar, you'll use either a tablespoon or a teaspoon. 16
  • Let the mixture boil until the sugar is dissolved, and then let it fully cool before putting it in the feeder.
  • Using your nail and hammer, punch a small hole in the lid of the jar. You're going to be cutting your sponge and you want your sponge to fit tightly through the hole, so keep it small. You can always make it bigger as necessary. 9
  • Cut your sponge into strings about one inch wide, and then pull it through the hole so there is about a half-inch of sponge sticking out from the top of the lid.
  • Remember, you want the sponge to stick tightly even when it's wet, so you might need to make it larger than you think. 1
