About Me:

I am always intrested in new ideas for my gardens. I don't plant many vegetables, but do mix a few herbs and vegetables among my flowers.

Favorite area of home improvement:

My gardens are always my favorite place to improve. The next project is to use our new metal carport for a backyard shelter for lawn furniture, bbq's, trellis for Bugle Vine and a small potting area. The carport is double wide and will be delivered in a couple of weeks. I am looking forward to starting this project, most of it in the Fall.

S.Louisiana it is very hot in the summer and our winters are short and brief freezes or frosts so I can't grow some of the things I see here, but I still have more choices then I have space or time for. Love some of the ideas I see here. Yesterday I say a pair of flip flops nailed to a wall with coffee mugs in them for pots. I think they were filled with moss roses. So cute but way to dry and hot here for that.

  • You can usually find someone to give you a five-gallon bucket or you can buy one for about $2.50 (Lowe's). Drill 4-5 holes on the bottom for drainage. Add some compost/soil that drains well followed by your tomato plant! 1

opted not to but them at 5.00 each. I could buy lots of wire for that money as I have 6 buckets. I used cleaned kitty litter buckets. Have to buy them anyway, not sensable to throw them out.

Invasive plant horror stories

Hometalk member and gardener extraordinaire Barb Rosen recently wrote of her nightmare experience with chameleon plant, Houttuynia cordata, and what may be her life-long project of getting rid of it. But Barb surely isn't alone in having planted something she regretted. For me, my biggest mistake was planting gooseneck loosestrife, Lysimachia clethroides. I'd heard how "rambunctious" the plant could be, but I had a dry, ...»

  • First, I put in an upside-down pot with a drainage hole to take up a little interior space. Not too big, though. Leave enough space for the plant!
  • One, good sized plant with room to grow will do. It looks every bit as beautiful as a mixed container!

smaller pot upside down sounds good, or the cat food cans. We throw a lot of those away since we have two cats. I have a 4' high culvert that needed something done with it. I had been throwing downed limbs into it as filler. We finally painted it and covered it with chicken wire and planted climbing roses around it.

I got this idea from pinterest and just had to do it! It took my hubby all day to cut out the planting trough, but I think it is worth it. It looks great.
