DYI: Repurposed Timber

From this snow-crushed barn ... to my studio stash, I dragged lengths of century-old farm implements to my table-saw and then my imagination. If it's vintage and has rust, old paint or a ...»
certain patina, it waits for a new life to unfold in my "groove den".

That is nice of you to say. I don't blog much because I am concentrating my time in the ...»
studio. The physicality of my creative work is a real pull ---so I don't sit still very well in front of this screen.

Repurposed Plastic

For a few years I have wanted to produce an assemblage piece that involved community effort ---with the caveat of bringing awareness to the public about the plastic junk we buy and ...»
discard. I got the substrate ready for assemblage (with the help of my art students) so it was ready for my local art association's open studios 3-day event in October. After that weekend, more studio visitors added on, as well as many community "villagers" at our association's holiday market during the month of December. Lastly, I took on the solo job of filling the crevices. Finding the right glues was key. It will hang around town to be viewed in various public spaces and private businesses. Not sure where Old Glory's final resting spot will be. I might donate it to our town hall or library.

  • Found on the side of the road. Cut out vertical spindles and added magnetic chalkboard.
  • Another roadside salvage. (Just throw your old unwanted bed in the bushes??)
  • I also have a thing for repurposing game pieces and vintage croquet sets.
  • These were made to last. Not an easy process to take off steel framing. Needed realigning, trimming, sanding--- lots of remodeling! Trigger was that the decal is still legible.
  • This one was easier only because of the grunt-work experience I had with the Flexible Flyer first.
  • Came from an old farmhouse and was stored in the dusty barn for decades. I think it was a lid for a bench, as there were dowels on the ends (as if it flipped open).
  • A gentle slow cleaning and varnishing process, plus beveling uneven edges to match.
  • Crazy clock and drawer-front sits on studio wall.
  • Top part was obviously the steering mechanism of the former sled. Croquet mallet = column + vintage game piece as finial.
  • Holes that housed the sled's steering rope now hold the screws for wall-mount. Just meant to be.

DYI: Hooked on Hooks

It's about visualizing. A sled, a bed headboard, an old drawer ...

What else could this be? Can I remodel it and add hooks? Can I figure out a way to mount ...»

it safely on a wall ? If there's a will ---and you have the right tools, then there's a way. We all need to hang stuff, right? It's just how we choose to do it that separates us.

  • Found some old, dinged-up, grimy, dusty handmade wooden boxes. They held hardware in someone's basement for decades ---until I came along and changed their purpose in life :)
  • Turquoise bar/handle (original color!) was salvaged from a vintage deck chair and was simply meant to be reincarnated here.
  • Shutter slats: cleaned, trimmed, some were painted, sanded, glued and nailed. (dabs of glue used only as a temporary hold)
  • First appearance, a little tame. Still needed some zip.
  • A pair of vintage zesters were turned inside out to make handles that wouldn't grate one's palm. The trick was how to attach them.
  • More slats and scrap wood (some with original paint) dress it up.
  • Vertical design application was easier than horizontal.
  • This box was designed to hang on the wall. Note cup hooks on bottom.
  • Recognize these parts?
  • This one was designed to hang vertically on the wall ---it has holes drilled in the back/bottom.
  • I have this thing for hooks ... practical and versatile. But
that's another post.

DIY: Repurposed Wooden Boxes

When you are known for repurposing old stuff like I am, friends and neighbors become your salvage allies. Nothing like an "emergency call" to rescue discarded goods from a garage, basement or estate sale.

  • This pillow was a custom order. Bottom circle stitching design spells out, "Class of 2013"
  • Envelope-opening in back makes for an uncomplicated slip-on design
  • Years of doodling pays off !
  • Cut a bunch shapes, textures and colors, lay-out design, dab with glue to hold in place & stitch.
  • Can you guess the fabric's original design intent?
  • When not in the garden, I still garden.
  • Just like leaves, no two pillows are exactly alike.

  • This home-made lamp stands 32"tall. It has a fraternal twin.
  • Pieces of plastic bags waiting to be fused. (You can check-out my technique article in ClothPaperScissors July/Aug. 2011 issue)
  • Free-motion sewing is decorative but not necessary. I attached my plastic fabric to a "de-clothed" shade.
  • Loved the original paint and knew that once halved, lamps were in its future. Took awhile to break thru the rusted bolts.
  • Long drill bit and persistence.
  • Great grater base allows the cord to slip out nicely.
  • The glow is seriously mod-cool-mysterious.
