An Alternative to Expensive Lampshades

I love to buy items from thrift stores and update them, but lamps are difficult because they usually don't have a shade with them, or the shade is in rough shape. Buying new shades at $20 ...»
or more defeats the purpose of thrifting. Baskets are a good alternative. #Love2Repurpose

Beth Hoff, I've seen wicker lamp ...»
shades in stores, so I don't know if it is a hazard or not- just want to play it safe. Those may be treated with some sort of fire retardant. I did remove part of the wicker at the top to allow heat to escape, so I'm thinking it should be ok. I don't know if you saw my other lamp shade alternative on here, using a wire trash basket: http://www.hometalk.com/1119227/another-alte...

  • The finished project with rope detailing and a few beach-y accessories.
  • I drilled holes along the frame and "stitched" clothes line rope around it, leaving space at the top for a decorative knot.
  • For detail at the top of the frame, I tied a mast head knot mat and attached it with glue and staples..
  • The mirror shelf before.
  • Beach-themed accessories complete the look: Palm leaf frame, starfish vase cuff, and "Sandy Toes" sign I printed onto drop cloth fabric.
  • I'm loving how this turned out. What do you think? :)

I'm so excited to have had the opportunity to partcipate in a challenge to transform a Wayfair product. This project was sponsored by Wayfair.com & Hometalk. I chose this mirror shelf and ...»

my dish flowers...

Well I FINALLY got them made. I am not very happy with them, I think they look stupid with pvc stems I didn't paint. (I should) But the hostas are coming up and will surround them so ...»
maybe they will look better soon. I think I also am going to move them back further, to the neighbors ' ugly house' to detract maybe from their peeling paint etc. Any suggestions as to how I could have done them better? Different plates, rebar? (Which cost more than the plates did!) This is my first attempt after seeing the great ones on Ht, and I was very leery. But FINALLYYYY! tada! NEW PICTURES.....hostas growing in, I am happier, doesn't look so barren now! Next ones will be green pvc or whatever! @KELLY, GAIL

  • I found these beautiful hydrangeas at Costco for $8.00. At the checkout the lady told me to make sure I put them in ice cold water. This intrigued me because I always thought that warm water was best for flowers. 6
  • First I cut the off the ends of the stems, making sure the cut was on a slant. Hydrangea stems are quite tough, so they need to be poked with something sharp to help with the water up-take. 2
  • I did a little research to find more tips on how to care for them and was rewarded with beautiful fluffy flowers that lasted for days and days!

When I bought these hydrangeas they were packaged up in floral cellophane so tightly that they sure didn't look very impressive. I was a bit hesitant to take them, but since they were so ...»
