Add a little 'bling' and color to any garden with beads!

I was a bit intimidated when I was first asked to team up with seven other bloggers and create something with beads. I'm not the most craftiest girl on the planet-and let's face it-beads have craft written all over them!

In the end-I decided on something that was both functional AND pretty for one of my gardens. A bird feeder seemed logical-and when I found this vintage cake tin in my stash-the plan to create with beads FINALLY started to come together.

Materials needed:

Cake tin

Beads ( I purchased mine at Hobby Lobby-they are 50% off right now)

Bead Wire (Very fine-10 lb test weight

Drill

Hook (for hanging)

Pliers/Wire cutter

Tape

Crimp ends

I wanted the feeder to hang from our potting shed-so the first step was deciding how low I wanted it to hang-and measure my wire accordingly.

I'm not sure who loves the feeder more. The orioles or me-because now I get to watch them nibble on the oranges right from our back deck. Stop by the blog for more on how I created my beaded bird feeder-and check out the other seven inspiring ideas!!!

Suggested materials:
  • Fluted Cake Tin
  • Colored beads
  • String
Pallet and Pantry

It just occurred to me... Maybe add a couple of drain holes just in case of rain???

I've heard that if you apply WD40 to the pole or strand that the squirrels would attempt to use, it is slippery and they won't be able to cross. They may also be repelled by the scent. Another idea is HOT pepper. It doesn't affect the birds (they are cold blooded), but the squirrels will get a taste of that and run for the hills (they are warm blooded like us, and won't like the hot). You can mix the pepper right in with the seeds. If you apply it around the feeder, you may have to replace the hot pepper after rains. Good thing to mix with peanut butter too if you have bear problems, make them a sandwich and they are less likely to return.
