How NOT to Paint Decals

Every find a decal on something metal or on a piece of furniture and you wanted to keep it and NOT paint it? Well here is a little trick to allow you to paint the piece but not the decal.
Metal watering can that was rusty and needed to be painted, but not the decal.
Use Vaseline to protect any area you do NOT want to paint.
Apply Vaseline with a paint brush on all of the decal to protect it from paint.

Thank you for a wonderful idea. I have a drop leaf table with decals for a nursery. I want to paint the table, but do not know how to deal with the decals. Remove them by sanding? I will use chalk paint.

Im doing this on an antique dressing table. The filigree are made from wood and oh so beautiful! I did a couple layers of CP,( my own blend) and sanded it back a bit. Much to my surprise there was original gold paint under the white that the previous owner had painted the solid cedar piece. I found gold paint on the mirror frame, and sexy legs of the dressing table. Im using Vaseline on as much of the gold as I can find. The piece will be a pearl grey ( kelly green and black mixed with a light grey based latex mis match gallon of paint I got for 3 bucks) I cannot wait to finish it!
