Design & Décor: Chevron Wood Wall- What should we do with it?

We have a chevron wood wall in our family room. I have no idea what to do with it. Right now it is stained an orangeish brown color.... very dated and dark. Same thing with the fireplace, ...»

I might suggest a few small, randomly placed shelves for decorative pieces and some hanging ...»
art. And I would create a 2" thick shelf on either side above 6 feet high that had up lighting and down lighting to highlight the vaulted ceiling and washing the wood wall texture highlighting the warmness of the wood while lighting up that dark end of the room. You can spear a less orange translucent stain over the orangey walls to get just the shades you want too. around the fireplace, a popular way to go is to paint the brick with a similar brick colored enamel and accent a few individual bricks with you other themes colors in the room.

  • Durrock on top of the cabinets, forms & supports under that. Wire to strengthen, plastic molds to hold the cement in & form an edge. Those are snapped off later. 2
  • Rent a cement mixer, add color, cement, & chemicals that prevent cracking. Get someone strong to lug it in in 5 gallon buckets & pour it onto the counter.Over & over again.
  • Watch it drip down the plastic after you all trowel it smooth an beat it & vibrate it with a sander, do it some more....do it again! And again!!!
And again!

DIY Cement Counter Tops!!!****????///// Don't even think about it!!! Here is our experience.

Difficult, messy beyond belief. More expensive than we thought. Wanted to cry & give up....at one point I hated them, but now, ah....I have to admit, well, you decide... Do they look good? Oh yeah, was it worth it? Yes it was.

I wonder if you could fabricate a rotating steel trowel from a variable speed drill and an old ...»
    metal fan blade?

Power steel trowels, with laser guides, are how they accurately smooth large pieces of concrete in construction.

You might consider adding a set of posts and a beam along with a traditional garage door in ...»
front of where the deck ends a dozen feet to make a secure parking area that, from the street would look like a typical garage.

Larger second floor windows and extend the lower roof over that patio. Update to warmer colors and restain the deck and railing to coordinate.

Dusty weathered wood and blue tones never look that good to me aside from a saltbox beach side bungalow.

Cleaning & Organization: Does anyone know how to remove existing paint splatters from brick? I have tried everything I know of with no success.

I would ask at a name brand paint store. Sandblasting is an extreme effect and not advisable ...»
    for exterior brick at all.

On small projects where a bit of paint got on unfinished or unsealed brick, rather than take a risk of dissolving it into the surrounding areas I put a wet sponge or towel over the spot and let time help release latex paints like this. If needed you can cover the area with a bit of plastic wrap to hold in the moisture and let it work through the brick and get behind the spot and release it. Paul C
