  • Kick your rock gardens up a notch and plant them in something instead. I chose a collection of old kettles. Loving the elevation and junky detail!
  • My little helper Teddy was busy scoping out the area. Approved! Whew... don't mess with a cat I say. 5
  • Each kettle got two rock garden plants, plus were further enhanced with some sticks and stones for a truer rock garden feel.
  • Please don't ask me what these pretty plants are, I'm not a label reader at all (gasp!) but you're welcome to tell ME if YOU know! 2

Forget the tea... these old kettles pour out rock gardens!

I adore working in the garden. Silent therapy in the sunshine while creating... doesn't get much better than that! ...»

Part of my Hometalk Meetup / Out of Africa event was doing something gardenish with junk. So I set about creating little rock gardens inside old kettles. Once I got them home, I found a perfect little corner for the small group.

The tea can wait... I want to plant more!

What's your favourite junky planter to use? I'd love more ideas!

  • I started with a foam mannequin head, Magikote Foam Primer and Stone Metallic Spray Paint by Krylon. I named my head Betty.
  • Betty got two thin coats of primer. The primer seals the foam and creates a smooth surface to paint on.
  • I set Betty on top of an empty wine bottle filled with pebbles for drying.
  • Betty also got several coats of Metallic Stone paint. It was easy to paint her while she was sitting on the bottle. I liked her on the bottle so much I decided to keep her there.
  • When she was dry, I used a compass to draw a 6" circle on the top of her head. I hollowed out the planting cavity with a kitchen knife and made a hole for drainage. Then I planted her with a trailing succulent I found at Home Depot.
  • I added Betty's "Bling" with some old necklaces, glasses and even some rhinestone earrings (they were easy to stick into the side of her head). Betty was born! She sits on top of the buffet in my dining room. Thanks for reading! 3

Gardening: Can you identify this plant?

This came up in the corner of my yard next to the fence. I dug it up and replanted it in my perennial bed, because it looked like it might be something good! Can anyone tell me what it might be?

  • The process was pretty simple! Using my Dremel, I sanded the top and bottom of the stump smooth.
  • Next, using my paint roller I gave the stump multiple coats of stain. Allowing each coat to dry before applying the next.
  • I left the stump in the garage for a few days to dry.
  • In order for this project to work you need to allow your stump to dry completely. Our stump sat outside to dry for many months on a covered porch, to protect it from the elements. Be sure to elevate your stump off the ground while drying to prevent mold.
  • Once the stump was dry I gave it a couple coats of clear enamel to protect it from scratches and spills.
  • I love the rustic-natural look of the stump table! 1
  • It's a perfect spot to set a drink and a snack while we're watching TV.
  • Best of all, it was rather inexpensive to pull the whole thing together. 2

Tree Stump Table

When we had a few dead trees cut down in our yard last year, I saved some of the stumps to decorate with. I used a couple stumps to spruce up our fall porch, then decided to turn one of the stumps into a side table.

Vintage white dining room

It's finally done and I love it. My husband and I have been working on our dining room for about 4 months and paint went on the last chair to call it done.

Come on by to see the rest of the photos

  • Plastic Plates add a pop a color for low cost!
  • Bought all the plastic plates at Target for about $2 each, plus the glass bird plate from Pier1 - it was too cute to pass up!
  • To quickly hang the plates, I used Velcro Command Strips. It allowed me to place the plates quickly but also rearrange them, as needed.

Plastic Plate Wall

What's the worst part about a plate wall? All those holes in the wall! Why not hang plastic plates using Command Strips instead? I bought all these plastic plates at Target (with the ...»
exception of one - can you guess which?) on sale for about $2 each. Then, I hung them using the Velcro Command Strips and was able to switch the plates up as much as I wanted. The whole project took less than 10 minutes and cost less than $35! Best. Project. Ever.

A old bookcase is updated to look like a fireplace!

I took an old nasty bookcase, a old mirror, and a footboard and pieced them together to create a fabulous faux fireplace!! ...»

Piecing items together (even chipboard for the detail!) and painting them the same color makes them look united.

Tin panels attached to a simple frame give the illusion of a chimney.

I'm loving my new "fireplace" and the charm it brings my space!
