About Me:

I love to do projects around my home! My husband is a talented guy and spending 44 yrs with him has made me pretty comfortable around power tools and tall ladders! We built this house ourselves with only a few subcontractors. I sew, cook, paint, install tile, lay brick, knit and blog! Guess that's why the name Miss Flibbertigibbet fits so well...I'm definitely "a little bit of this, a little bit of that". But it all encompasses my love for decorating and making beautiful spaces....even without much money! I hope you enjoy seeing my projects and would love to have you visit me at www.missflibbertigibbet.com

Favorite area of home improvement:

I think I love transforming spaces most of all. So I especially love designing custom pieces for a room. Just decorating a room is fine but I always think adding some architectural detail makes the biggest difference...moldings, built in pieces, bookcases, window seats, pillars....I could go on forever!

Using an Orbital Sander to Create Planked Effect

I recently found an antique table that I planned to just repaint. But as I sanded the top, I found that some areas were sanding off first and it started to give a planked effect. I ...»
decided to go with the flow and use my sander and a technique i've done before on other furniture. Tilting the orbital sander at an angle allowed me to follow along the lines that were forming, making them more obvious. I not only was able to reveal the two shades of paint but also the wood! It came out so nice! You can use this technique on any piece of furniture if you want a rustic look.

Chalk Paint French China Hutch

I love to refinish furniture! I have a bunch in the garage and I have to STOP myself from getting more! I hate to see a sad piece of furniture that could have new life with just a little work.

I need a 12 step program......

Hi Jo, actually, much of the info out there says you don't even need to sand, just clean it ...»
well. I sell furniture so I really want my finish to hold up for my customers. So, I always sand some. I definitely take the shine off the whole piece using an orbital sander and hand sanding where necessary. Dust the whole piece down after sanding and then wipe with a damp rag once or twice to remove any residue. In addition, use a synthetic brush rather than a natural bristle brush and you'll have less brush strokes. Wherever you have brush strokes (in whatever direction they run) is where your wax will settle. So, if you want a really smooth finish with no visible lines, then sand between coats with a fine grit sandpaper. The popular "look" with chalk based paint is to see those lines and marks but just in case that's not for you, take the time to sand!

Making a Splash with a Chandelier Fountain

Mind Officially Blown! I saw an idea for upcycling that I just had to share...

The visual team at Roger's Gardens in Newport Beach, CA took a crystal chandelier and ...»

turned it into a FOUNTAIN! The water drips off of the crystal and down into a fountain below... the effect is pure elegance, and it certainly is something I've never seen before.

Can you just imagine this as decor for #OutdoorLiving , in an elegant formal garden or a greenhouse? At a wedding reception? Perfection!

  • I wish computers had smell-a-vision because the scent of these bars is AH-mazing.
  • I used torn paper, burlap ribbon and raffia to package some soaps into cute little "presents." 1
  • I added a few bars to a white dish on a bed of fresh rosemary, tied it with raffia and added a stamped gift tag from brown craft paper. This makes a wonderful Mother's Day present.

Homemade Rosemary-Citrus Goats Milk Soap

15 minutes prep time you have all the time in the world. And you only need 3-4 ingredients max. I have conquered the world of homemade soap. As God as my witness, I will never buy store-bought soap again. :)

Milk Paint Windsor Chair

I found an old windsor chair at the thrift store which was covered in brown PAINT! I guess someone didn't want to take the time to refinish it. I took it for my shop even though the ...»
Colonial style is not very trendy right now. I just couldn't pass up a good chair. So, I sanded it and used three colors of Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint in layers to try and get a really faded, old look on the chair. I used a wash of Mustard Seed YelloW, then a wash of Tricycle and then finally, to tone it all down, a wash of Typewriter. I finished with several coats of clear wax. I think I ended up with a nice, old looking finish! You can see more pics and read more on the blog

  • My Cardinals love this cute DIY Terra Cotta Bird Feeder! 1
  • Gather these easy to find supplies: Terra Cotta Pot, Saucers, Picture Hanging Wire, 5" Eye Bolt,2 Nuts, Fishing Swivel, Branch & a water bottle! Soak your terra cotta in water over night to make drilling the holes easier... 1
  • You have to drill several holes in the pots/saucers and to do this you'll need a drill with a masonry bit. After soaking your terra cotta and marking your holes, slowly drill over markings applying steady pressure as you drill. 3
  • The water bottle will be your seed reservoir- Cut the top off your water bottle so it fits inside the pot. Mark holes to line up with the drilled holes in the terra cotta...using an exacto knife, cut out holes in water bottle-
  • Now simply connect all the pieces with your eye bolt and heavy gage wire! The eye bolt goes through the water bottle, clay pot, saucer and tree branch-secure it with a nut on top and on bottom... 1
  • Easy and oh so cute spring project!
