What sort of closet do you need in your bedroom?

We've been asked this question a lot when people are remodeling their master bedrooms: what sort of closet do I need?

A stand-alone closet is smaller, less expensive and easier to buy & install.

A fitted closet gives you more space and can look more aesthetically pleasing. Fitted closets are also great for filling space in odd-shaped rooms.

And a walk-in closet? Well, that's the dream ...»

right there! Lots of space to lay out and display clothing and accessories.

As with any home improvement it comes down to two things: need and cost. Do you have a lot of stuff that requires a larger closet? And can you afford to build a bedroom addition that includes a walk-in?

So what do you have in your home? What do you WANT in your home? Has anyone recently upgraded their closets? Let us know!

Real Estate: Top ways to get your home ready to sell...any other good ideas?

Firstly, cosmetic changes: clean up the yard, plant flowers and put down nice mulch in the front yard. Add new house numbers, mailbox and front exterior light fixture for a fresh, inviting appeal. If the exterior of the home needs to be painted, get it painted - even if it's just the front. Also consider replacing the front door or giving your existing one a fresh coat of paint.

Add fresh paint in the entry hall, kitchen and bathrooms - these are the rooms that appeal most to ...»

potential buyers! Paint your interior doors and door trim, and if dated or damaged then replace door knobs or doors altogether. New carpets and vinyl flooring make the house look clean and bright. Replace light fixtures if they are damaged or dated.

Remove most of your belongings - empty closets look larger than full ones! You should also remove most family photos and personal items.

Carry out a few big renovations that are must-dos (both interior and exterior). Focus on the front exterior of home, entry hall, bathrooms and kitchen; paint exterior, replace front door, exterior lights, front landscaping.

Paint bathrooms and the kitchen, possibly add a new toilet, vanity and sink in bathroom, depending on the condition of existing ones. Maybe also replace flooring. Unfortunately many of the changes in the kitchen are big and expensive; painting or refacing cabinets is sometimes manageable. Install new linoleum or vinyl flooring depending on what is in the kitchen already. Add new cabinet knobs if current ones are dated, and maybe a new countertop depending on the cost. Replace your appliances if current ones are damaged or dated.

Let us know your top tips to getting your home ready to sell!

  • see above the fridge there are front doors but they are so deep however I wanted them to come all the way out to front of fridge so I had them put a door on the side to access the back 4
  • see the door straight ahead...I made it so there are shelves inside and to the left...and the front side is open top to bottom I can add a shelf or take it out and have tall items and still access the stuff in the corner. 3
  • Here in the far back corner cabinet it goes deep beside the dishwasher which is built in so on the other side of the kneewall I have a door that opens and I can access the back side of that spot
  • This I think shows the Drawers well at the end of my "bar" and then on sides are fake panels
  • This shows my bit of bling in my little handelier and the wonderful sing my plumber talked me into I LOVE holds very large items. Cheaper and easier to install than a farmhouse sink
  • This shows the one door below the bar that is accessible and kind of the length of the bar and to the right is the microwave cabinet I had made to look like a built in
  • This is the beadboard and molding I added in kitchen dining room and bathroom to add some visual interest was just BORING
  • Here shows the Large base molding I choose, and a tad bit darker color for the walls, and my "decor style" 2

Updated pictures of my home...2 years later

What is funny is that 2 years ago I was 95% done with my house, Now I am STILL 95% done with my home! I have been working on my very last room...It took 6 months to really get my entired ...»
house all put together...Its taken over a year to get what I want in this ONE room...of course you guessed it...my craft room. Soon I can post pictures of it..I do have the paint done, the carpet done, I have purchased the items mostly for organizing it, finally bought the OLD studio desk I have been wanting (wanted something I could repurpose and found it last week but we had to take it apart to even get it through the door!) but hopefully within a month will have my craft room ready.

EDITED HERE>>>>I think there were some things I added into the design that I had never seen (secret access to things like the side door on the cupboards above the fridge...I also have an opening in the living room (unobtrusive) to access the back corner of one of teh cabinets...and I extended the cabinet under the sink looks like a tiny cabinet added but really just more storage inside! I also designed the full wall unit to almost look like a built in..and made it so I could enclose my microwave and have roll out drawers on the bottom...those little things I just loved! Then my contractors wife stole my idea of the beadboard pannelling in their home and I loved that too!

What do you think? Am I doing ok with keeping control? Compare them to the ones 2 years ago I posted before....start here and you can click the button on the bottom and can see it as a slideshow..course this is only kitchen living room so far..will do the others and add to this later to see some True before pictures go here http://www.hometalk.com/cottageatheart#90748...

Design & Décor: Design trends for 2013...what do you think?

Here's my thoughts on some cool design trends for the upcoming year. Do you have any to add? Do you think my suggestions suck? Let us know!

- Rumpled bedding

That's right, our beds have lost some of their former polish! First, use bedding in neutral tones (rather than stark white), which have a decidedly unpretentious vibe to them. Second, pair complimentary and contrasting colors and forget the "matchy-matchy" look of ...»

years past. Next, pile on a bunch of pillows in different sizes. Finally, embrace the power and luxury of a throw but, rather than pulling it taut like a bedspread, just throw it naturally across the bed.

- Snakeskin

First, find a new area rug which features looping, scaly coils on a dark gray background to add underneath your coffee table. But don't stop there as this will say, I like DRAMA in any room you add it to. Next, find a "snakeskin" fabric and add this in a small amount for the most dramatic effect. Do you dare to show off your creativity with a snakeskin seat? Of course you do! Why not start by reupholstering that old stool in your bathroom. Just one small "coat" of the snakeskin-style will add jet-set glamour to your entire room.- Coastal styleThink: Accent pieces. Starfish, coral and sand are the obvious choices, but why don't you kick it up a notch by adding a stylish lamp? There are ones made of glass and full of seashells which are truly unique. Large, heavy nautical knots act perfectly as door stops. Framed nautical knots add a whimsical touch to any room. How about a colorful surfboard in one corner of your room? These "accent pieces" are a bold statement, even if you don't surf! Vintage wooden signs ("This way to the beach") are plentiful but, there is one note of caution. Anything vintage may look out of place if you are remodeling your home with a contemporary feel to it. The moral of this story is to pick your coastal accents carefully.

Light sage green is a beautiful color and ideal for a small living room. Also different ...»
artificial lighting such as wall sconces (which also save floor space) will add detail to the room instead of bright overhead lights. Ceilings and floors should be as bright and neutral as possible as these are often overlooked but are two of the main factors in making rooms seem smaller.

Remodeling vs. New Home Construction: How are they different from each other?

As we talk with potential clients these days we find there are several questions we hear often. ...»

In this article, we will address one of those common questions: Is there a difference between a design-build remodeling contractor and a new home construction contractor?

New home construction builders use architects and/or "stock" plans and new home contractors to build your home. If an architect is involved, he/she usually imposes a personal style onto the design and develops the concept drawings and plans on paper. Most architects are not builders – they can conceptually draw the plans, but it takes a quality builder to see the architect's plans and know if the concepts can be transformed into practical, effective solutions without costly alterations during the project. What works on paper doesn't always convert smoothly to the building process. Also, having more "cooks in the kitchen" can cause confusion, a loss of the client's vision, and unclear communications, all areas which lead to significant disappointment during the process of a remodel or addition.

When done right, remodeling design is thoughtful and complex. Designing a new home easily allows you the opportunity to trade square footage and budget between bathrooms, kitchens and other rooms in your home. If you want a larger kitchen, you can add the square footage to the kitchen and decrease the square footage in your dining room, for instance. Quality remodelers know how to reconfigure rooms to fit in your existing home by utilizing the space to its maximum potential.

Jeff Titus explains, "Many people don't realize that there is a lot more involved in remodeling a home than new construction. When remodeling, there are several factors you need to contend with, such as taking precautions for safety and cleanliness when the home is occupied, working with conditions that are not square or plumb, matching existing materials such as tile, flooring and moldings, and creating designs that will enhance the home as if the new renovation was always there. When moldings need to be matched and suppliers no longer carry the product, Titus Built mills the molding to match the existing detail. When a tile type is no longer sold off the shelf, we contact our suppliers to find a match. It takes years of experience and connections to products and subcontractors to produce fine quality renovations."

How much does a bathroom remodel cost?

The average cost for a bathroom remodel depends on many factors, but one of the biggest variables that homeowners don't think of is the size of the bathroom they want. ...»

A powder room or half bathroom is the smallest and will usually feature just a toilet and sink.

A three quarters bathroom usually features a toilet, sink and shower, and is an increasingly popular choice of main bathroom.

And finally a full bathroom with toilet, sink, bathtub and shower cubicle is the largest, and is usually found to be the main family or master bathroom in the home.

The larger the room you remodel, the more it will cost; also think about the quality of materials you use and whether you can do some of the work yourself.

Check out our blog for a more detailed breakdown of bathroom remodeling costs!

How much does a kitchen remodel cost?

There's no easy answer to that question unfortunately! Think of these basic points that will greatly affect the cost of your remodel:

- Will the kitchen be enlarged and will plumbing have to be moved around? If so, this will require much more time and effort - which translates into more money spent!

- Will you do any of the work yourself to save money? Even if it's just tearing out the old kitchen or ...»

clearing up at the end you can save the amount of time contractors are in your home for.

- What quality materials do you want to use? Marble and hardwood floors are beautiful, but you will pay a high price for them! There are many lower cost, great looking materials available.

- Will you reface your appliances and cabinets or replace them altogether? Giving your appliances and cabinets a makeover with some new siding and a fresh coat of paint can make them look as good as new - and save you money!
