I was born in Durham, NC and grew up in Creedmoor and Nashville, NC. I'm an alumnus of Oak Ridge Military Academy and North Carolina State University. I've been married for over thirty years and we have two children.
I have worked in broadcasting for over 40 years, and I have been an announcer at 680-AM-WPTF Radio in Raleigh since 1975. We started the award winning "WPTF Weekend Gardener" in 1985 as a thirty minute show, taking listener's phone calls and have expanded over the years to 3 hours (8AM-11AM Eastern Time.) We are now heard worldwide at WPTF.com. Our predecessor, John H. Harris, actually created the show in 1945 as a 15 minute program ("The Tar Heel Gardener") and read and answered listener's letters. He retired in 1985 and we have now had a gardening show on WPTF continuously for over 66 years. My friend Anne Clapp has co-hosted the show with me for most of the program's run. I must say I have enjoyed doing "The Weekend Gardener" more than anything in my long broadcast career. I have learned more from our guests and listeners and made more friends than I could ever have hoped to in any other facet of broadcast journalism. We are excited about being a part of "hometalk" and sharing gardening ideas with our old and new friends.
