Gardening: How to get bermuda grass out of a raised bed

I have my raised asparagus bed laid our and sides already staked in. Because the area has never been tilled, we sprayed it twice with extra strength Roundup to kill the wild onions and ...»
bermuda grass. Today I tilled it, then raked to get as much of the bermuda grass out as possible, but there has to be millions of spikes still in the dirt. Now how do I get rid of all of them before tilling in the leaves and sand I plan to add to the existing dirt.

From your comments I assume the asparagus has not been planted yet. It does take wet soil to ...»
be able to pull Bermuda grass out of a raised bed and "hand pulling" is about the only way to get it out. When you till the area you break the "strands" of Bermuda so each small piece has to be pulled out; if you leave even small pieces they will grow during the summer. A steel rake or a spading fork will help turn the soil to remove the Bermuda. The Water Weeder may speed up the process. It is going to be alot easier to get the grass out before you plant the Asparagus - even if it means not getting the bed in place this year.

If you are a novice to the "sport" of gardening It might help to learn a bit more about ...»
gardening before you actually put a shovel or hoe to the ground. It saves frustration, a sore back and spending great quantities of money. You might check the local newspaper or social network listings for a garden club or some programs on gardening presented by a local club or garden center. Lots of places are having flower shows at this time of year to whet peoples appetites for gardening. The Phidelphia Flower Show has always drawn crowds who want to learn more about plants and gardening.

Sometimes you can take a walk through your neighborhood and find a yard that looks like something you would want to have. Most gardeners like to be complimented on their yards and are flattered when someone asks them for advice.

I am not sure what you mean by "way back". The holly can grow to be slightly over 4 feet tall. ...»
If you want to keep it small you need to cut it back severely during the winter and now is the time in this area. The Otto Luyken will bloom soon - if it hasn't already started with our weather pattern this year. As soon as it blooms it can be cut back. It is a pant that usually grows to about 5 feet tall. If these plants are "drastically overgrown" for the area where they are planted you may want to rethink the landscaping design in that area.

With that much slope I think you will be happier if you level the planters. Run the 8' ...»
dimension across the slope then dig out the area at the top of the planter so you will have at least 4 inches of the planter above ground and let the other 8' dimension sit on top of the ground..

Gardening: Grass won't grow on hill and it erodes - advice?

We are at a loss here! This is on the side of our house (faces NE). Our property goes up to the Bradford Pear trees and rock line. ... the play area is ours, and is very important to us ...»
since we have a 4 and 6yr old.

The first challenge is that we are in a low area, so this hill gets a beating with erosion. In the summer, it gets mid day sun, but the Bradford Pear trees to shade a good bit of it so Bermuda grass has no chance. We have put down (haphazardly) cedar chips under the play set which does the job... the area at the base of the hill and the far side of the play set is what is CRYING for help!

We do not want to get rid of the BP trees.. they offer quite a nice level of privacy w/our neighbors.

From the shadows it appears there is not a lot of sun in the area you are attempting to grow ...»
grass. With a steep hillside slope on a northeast bank and trees at the top of the bank it is going to take very good soil preparation and either laying sod or having the area slit seeded to make have grass produce a deep enough root system to prevent erosion. Bentgrass, Zoysiia and Centipede are the more shade tolerant grasses.

Remember that Bamboo survived the Atomic Bomb blast in Japan so it is a tough plant. Any root ...»
or plant joint left in the ground after plants are dug are capable of regrowing so if you dig you will just have to be persistent evey year in digging up any sprouts that come up. Cutting the plant and painting the cut stem with the "strong" version of Round-up probably does the best job in the shortest length of time but it will take more than a year to get it under control..

greening up in small protected areas in the Raleigh area right now. My own Zoysia is greening in an area next to a brick walkway and a spot where a container-grown plant got fertilized.
